Just double checking am I right in saying that I should set the phone to GSM only over there to save battery as WCDMA won't work and it would constantly try to keep finding it?

    Yep. You're dead right.
The Desire is a dual (WCDMA) band and has 900 and 2100 frequencies, neither of which are used for WCDMA in the US. They use 850, 1700 and 1900.

It will work fine though on any networks with that switched off, as it's quadband GSM and has both 850 and 1900 GSM, both of which are very common there
