I busted up my baby finger knuckle hitting a bag once, i think it depends how hard the bag is you'll know yourself once you give it a smack!

Alot of people will tell you any form of hand conditioning is just going to damage your hands in the long term.
I think if you are doing regular workouts where you hit the bag hundreds of times, you need gloves/ hand wraps/ both.

However if you are focusing purely on hand conditioning, you obviously don't use hand protection. You have to be smart, working up to higher reps and harder punches.
I use a makiwara which is meant to be used with relatively low repitions as regularly as possible.

So I would say, if you are hitting the bag for training, protect the hands, if you are focusing on hand conditioning then don't wear hand protection but be smart. Don't think of hand conditioning as a by product of hitting the bag, either work at it separately or forget it.

Wraps + gloves are essential IMO. All it takes is one dodgy hook to arse up your wrist without them. You hit the bag enough times and that's eventually gonna happen.

thanks for the replies guys id better invest in a pair of gloves and wraps so.
just another quick question though. i dont compete on competitions so should i get a pair of light gloves i just want to do it for my own training. also has anyone got any experience on whether hand conditioning does any damage in the long term?

you will also probably skin your knuckles which will mean enforced time off from training, get wraps and gloves, you can see damage done to hands by old time karate guys with mashed up knuckles and bad wrists , the knuckles and bones in the hand are easily damaged/ broken, abusing them can lead to problems including arthritis down the road

I'd say 10 or 12 ounce depending on how big you are.

Does anyone know a good shop online for bags gloves? They will be used for padwork and light sparring aswell.

    Thanks

not quite an answer to your question, but I would be inclined to not use bag gloves, and instead use a set of 12 or 14 oz gloves, and have a seperate set for sparring that neverget used on the bag. I know it seems like doubling up but your sparring partners will thank you for it
