Hi all I am going to be made redundant soon and was hoping to start my little company, To do this I need a crew cab jeep as It will aslo have to double as a family car but not very often, (only In bad weather as we get snow almost every year)I have been told that an L200 has to be taxed as as private but an Nissan navara or iszisu D max can be taxed as commercial, can anyone offer some insight please as money will be tight and I do not want to buy a jeep that I can't afford to tax , ( Or sell on )
It could be 8 to 12 months before my buisness takes off After I make a purchase.

    Thanks

    D

Firstly, id like to wish you well in your new enterprise.....I hope it's not construction related....

As far as I'm aware there are several issues here...not only the cost of taxing the vehicle but the cost of buying it and the cost of insuring it also.
The cost of (for example) leasing a commercial vehicle can be claimed as a legitimate business expense and the VAT thereon can be claimed back too. You can also reclaim the VAT on your diesel......something you CANT do, if you are using a private vehicle, even for business use although it tends to be more efficient to pay mileage to an employee or director for business mileage using their own private vehicle. You CANNOT do this unless you form a limited company if you are self employed. You CANNOT do this if you are a sole trader or a member of a partnership. You can only do it if you are an employee (a company director is an employee of the company, even if he owns the company himself).

A commercial vehicle will cost less because it attracts a lower rate of VRT when it's imported, but as far as I recall, insurance costs are higher if it's primarily used for business use.

A private vehicle is more expensive to buy and to tax, but less expensive to insure.

If you're using a vehicle which is insured for commercial use to transport your nearest and dearest then you should make sure that they are actually insured while in the vehicle.....

    Regards,

    E

you can commercially tax and insure it but keep in mind not all commercial insurance plicies cover S,D&P , even if you insure it correctly and tax it commercial if customs stop you you will be in a world of trouble and owe private tax back as far as you bought the car and a fine (afaik) , all crewcabs can be taxed privately but this will cost a lot more especially post july 08 , for instance (isuzu d-max private tax is 2100 euro for the 3 litre)

You've got me confused here. Are you saying you can't reclaim VAT on diesel in the bolded section? You can reclaim VAT on diesel once you've VAT registered and a sole trader

You can get a quote to include SD&P just make sure to ask several times that it covers you and then fully read the policy document.

OP you may be better off going for a 4Motion VW Transporter crew cab or similar then a crew cab jeep, very few of the crew cab jeeps now qualify for commercial that while these do.
