be very careful some of the politicians will "run with the hare and hunt with the hounds", note one has said this far and no further, but will vote with the government. I have learned that politicians in most case will do what the party says.

e mail all politicians who oppose the ban and lend them your support and encouragement. Change as appropriate

    Dear__________

I note today that as a Fianna Fail deputy you stood up and voiced concerns over Minister Gormleys blatant attack on rural pursuits. I would like to thank you and offer my support, I will ensure that all my colleagues and friends are told of this support so that shooting/hunting men in your constituency can continue to offer their support to you at election time.

    Regards

There's rarely anyone in the Dail for any debate JW.
And there's been people calling it both ways - the whip being taken off a FF senator is putting the wind up some people, and Cowen can't afford to lose the greens now.

The Irish Times today thinks it was all lip service, but it makes the front page:
Scale of FF backbench revolt on stag hunting shocks Ministers
    STEPHEN COLLINS and MARY MINIHAN

SEVEN FIANNA Fáil TDs spoke out in the Dáil yesterday evening against their own Government’s legislation to ban stag hunting.

While almost all of the rebel TDs are expected to vote for the Wildlife (Amendment) Bill 2010 in the Dáil on Tuesday the scale of the revolt came as a shock to Ministers.

With further Green Party-inspired animal welfare legislation, which has generated opposition in Fianna Fáil, due to come before the Dáil later next week, the cohesion of the Coalition will be tested before the summer recess.

Green Party leader and Minister for the Environment John Gormley listened as a string of Fianna Fáil speakers denounced the ban on stag hunting during an ill-tempered debate following the introduction of the Bill in the Dáil yesterday.

Of the eight Fianna Fáil TDs who spoke during yesterday’s second stage debate, only one, Minister of State Martin Mansergh, backed the Bill.

Three of the Fianna Fáil TDs for Meath expressed outright opposition to the Bill, which affects the Ward Union Hunt. The hunt is based in Co Meath and in north Co Dublin.

Meath West Fianna Fáil TD Johnny Brady warned the Minister, the Taoiseach and members of the Government “that they cannot depend on my support whether this Government lasts two months or two years . . . if anything else is tinkered with you have not my support’’.

Thomas Byrne from Meath East questioned the constitutionality of the legislation and suggested President Mary McAleese should refer it to the Council of State. Mary Wallace, also from Meath East, said the ban represented a threat to the rural economy and said she had deep reservations about it.

Dublin North TD Michael Kennedy said there should be an impact assessment undertaken on the issue.

Fine Gael Meath East TD Shane McEntee also pleaded with the Minister to defer the Bill, saying there would be more blood spilled in Croke Park on Sunday when Dublin played Meath than there would be in 10 years of the Ward Hunt.

Mr Gormley said the decision to introduce the legislation was not taken lightly and insisted there were public safety issues involved, as it was simply not possible for the hunt to prevent deer in flight from leaping through hedges on to public roads.

The Minister attacked Labour for its opposition to the Bill. “I am disappointed at the cynical decision by the Labour Party to abandon its opposition to blood sports,” he said.

He said senior members of the party, including its current leader Eamon Gilmore and former leaders Pat Rabbitte and Ruairí Quinn, had publicly stated their opposition to blood sports, including stag hunting. “It appears that for Labour Party members no principle is too cherished to be abandoned if they believe there are votes in it for them.”

Michael D Higgins responded it was outrageous to suggest Labour favoured cruelty or blood sports.

Meanwhile, the party whip was removed from Fianna Fáil Senator Denis O’Donovan for abstaining in the Seanad vote on the Dog Breeding Establishment Bill last week.

Is that a word inefectuality ??

I have a few beers taken so I may be seeing double.

I'm all for green Energy, I hope to have a wind generator and geo-thermal on my house.

But the greens remind me of people in the students union in college, full of ideas but no substance.

I was watching Oireachtas report this eve, Gormie was on the ropes from the flack of a fine galer

He will not admit he is anti-bloodsport as he now has too much to lose.

He has a prius now, he was on a bike before this :D

    Thats what happens.
Labor are behind the RISE campaign now, as well as a few FF back benchers.

Politics is not about what is wrong or right, it is about saying what voters want to hear ;)

The rest of the panel/govt realize thousands are behind RISE etc

So it is currently politically popular to support RISE.
As they old saying goes, a week is a long time in Politics :D

...And then voting the way your party whip tells you, regardless of what you've blathered on about in the Dail.

At the end of the day - going forward - they don't want an election.

Just listened to it on Pat Kenny. Looks like there will be a big crowd in Trim tomorrow - according to Gavin Duffy.

Unfortunately it also looks like the whip will be cracked and the FF TD's who are waffling on about supporting their constituents will back down and vote for the Bill. Backbone is non existent within that lot so Gormless could get his way.

Seems likely, unfortunately. FF TDs know that at the next election, not only are they out of government, few of them are likely to keep their seats no matter what happens between now and the election; so avoiding that election for as long as possible is in their personal best interests.

Can we start a new public service sport, Green Hunting, they are an semi intelligent quarry and should know when crossing roads to remember their safe cross code thereby removing the (ahem) safety issues. :D

Throw in the non held by elections, the water and property tax. They could fall very quickly.Under the simple old saying.NO TAXATION WITHOUT REPERSENTATION...You want my tax money, repersent me then. The good people of Donegal and elswhere that have no repersentation in the Dail should now simply refuse to pay any Govt tax in any shape or form, until those by elections are held.Bet you they would be held pretty quick then.
Puttin your party under the Whip can backfire too, it is done too often as in Irish politics.Might just take one or two people of principle to resign or quit[As rare as hens back molars I know..but we live in hope],and Fatty is sitting with a minority..General election time,or maybe cartridge box time, seeing that the other two boxes of democracy the ballot box and the soap box,are being ignored here alot.

Grizzly, that's not really how our government works. In order for the population being ticked off to actually topple the government, the government party's TDs have to ignore the whip or leave the party. That aside (and since very very few FF TDs would keep their seats in the next election, it's unlikely they'll trigger that election), there's not much we can do. There's no provision in the constitution for the electorate to force an election.

Yeah true enough...:( Thank God this place was never under East bloc Communist rule.Where the rest of the pouplations got ticked off in the end once Ivan lost control to get out on the streets and demand elections. The peoples republic of Ireland would rank along with proably N Korea and Cuba as an anorchism to he cold war.Still in 2050!!!Until we,the people decide to get up and out, nothing will change. We will all moan and give out in the pub to each other, but no one will make the first move.:(

When else can you get them to stand still long enough to shout at them?

Mind you... the cynic in me really would love to know how many people in RISE voted Fianna Fail at the last election...

    From my local Minister.......

    Dear Denis,

Your e-mail of the 25th of June refers.

I will be showing my backbone by voting with the Government in connection with the Wildlife Bill because that is the agreement that we reached with the Green Party in the renewed Programme for Government.

I’m sorry that I cannot oblige by being supportive of the position you have adopted in relation to that matter on this occasion but I’m sure that you would prefer to see your local representatives honour commitments that they made in formal agreements.

    Kindest regards,

    Yours sincerely,

Got an answer from Mary Wallace this morning.
That really is a farcical statement by her.
I will not tolerate any further meddling with the needs of
my community be it urban or rural.
...unless, of course, it might bring down the FF government if I was to vote against such meddling, in which case I would of course concede under protest and allow the meddling to take place, as I just did yesterday...

As a neutral observer I feel neither side has come out of this with much creditability.

The GP attempt to mask failure on so many green/conservation issues while in government by going after a small irrelevant activity like a single stage hunt was truly reprehensible and marks a new low for this party with with which so many had hoped would shake up the tired old political establishment that had failed this country with its miss-management of so many natural resources, failure in dealing with bad planning and the lip service paid to conservation etc. :(

On the other hand, listening to the likes of Mattie Mcgrath claiming that the legislation would shut down rural Ireland and close zoo's etc. certainly didn't do RISE's campaign any good since anyone with half an IQ could see this this was ridiculous scare-mongering of the worst type. Some of the spokespeople for RISE too came across badly in this respect on many of the interviews I heard in recent days with claims that the likes of angling and shooting vermin would be next, despite facts like more deer culling licences having been granted in recent years by Gormley then any other previous minister.

All in all a rather sorry episode that took up way too much time in the Dail and elsewhere given the huge problems that threaten the very viability of this country for generations to come:(
