I really hope they didn't. They wouldn't even think of saying that kind of stupid, lazy horsesh1t about a man remaining competitive in his 50s - they'd be singing his praises.

I want to be a French TT Champ in 21 years, the title is mine... unless she still wins at 72.

harmon did, but more or less said
"I feel sorry for her tbh, you just think she should move on with her life....quite sad really/I feel sorry for her a bit"

Jeez, if that's what he said and unless he knows something that no one else does, or there is some particular context, it's a pretty ****ty thing to say I would think.

Maybe he should reflect on his own self and achievements. He talks about bike races for a living. If that's the pinnacle of his achievements then one might consider that to be quite sad.

If this was the same bit of commentary that I heard, some time last year as far as I can recall, then I don't recall that being said. What I do recall was that one of the top GB female riders was sharing commentary with Harmon and she said that Longo was quite "eccentric" or words to that effect. She didn't elaborate but the impression that that Longo was so dedicated to her cycling career, to the exclusion of everything else, that it took its toll on the rest of her life. Her life didn't sound like a barrel of laughs and I think that Harmon commented that maybe her quality of life would improve if she were to retire as the champion that she is.

That's my memory of it, nothing bitchy or snide, just a brief discussion that reflected on someone who sounds like they continue to sacrifice an awful lot to remain at the top level of women's cycling.

Longo claimed her first French national title in 1979, coincidentally the year that second-place finisher Ferrier-Bruneau was born.

The girl who finished in third place looks young enough to be her granddaughter!

I wouldn't expect anything else from Harmon. Awful commentator to be honest.

Was she on the podium at the 1987 Tour de France with Stephen Roche (the time Charlie Haughey won?)

    Lol,

Good woman yerself. I thought the thread was going to say she had kicked the bucket or something. Not that she's still winning races.
