Unmissable Spots in Croatia?

Hi, my friends and I are heading to Croatia in just over a week. We're flying into Split but we haven't decided where to go from there, we're just playing it by ear. If anyone has any recommendations or advice to offer as to places to see or things to do that would be such a help. I hear there is an island called Havar (probably spelling it wrong!) which is good for nightlife, and we would like to see Dubrovnic as well, but beyond that we're very flexible. Also, is it true that the beaches are very stoney over there?! Any advice would be so appreciated.

    Thanks,
    D.

Yeah, the coastline is not sandy, but I wouldn't let this turn you off. Croatia is a fantastic country.

If you'll travel, there is the Plitvice Lakes National Park for a hiking tour of the 16 lakes and hundreds of waterfalls (about 140km from Split).

There are a pile of islands off Croatia and Havar is quite costly for accommodation so shop around, but I find Croatia very cheap for food and drink and the people are really approachable and friendly.

Also, don't forget to factor in the times it'll take to get ferries to the islands.

the north western part of croatia is stunning, all the major national parks are located there, a good base to explore those parks is zadar http://www.find-croatia.com/national-parks-croatia.html

one other thing that caught my eye while in croatia is how crystal clear the water is, quite amazing i have never seen anything like it anywhere else on my travels

If you end up in the very NW of the country check out the Roman ampitheathre in Pula.

Hvar was my favourite island, definitely worth a visit. I also liked Korcula.

The beaches are mostly stony, but the island of Brac has some nice beaches and is quite lively.

    +1 to Hvar! Its lovely.

As you flying into Split, you should visit Trogir, It's a UNESCO world heritage site and very pretty. Its just the far side of Split airport :)

Croatia is great. do like others have said. also I hear budva is lovely, but sadly I missed it on my travels. Kotor in montenegro is just south of you. That's WELL worth a visit. It was probably my fav place on the dalmation coast. Stay there for a night if you can, do some exploring. Get accomodation inside the walled part of town. In the morning go climb up the walkway at the back of town (unlike me bring water though!)

edit: might be an idea to rent a car for a few days

I'd also recommend an adventure holiday: http://www.huck-finn.hr/kayaking_clear_rivers_country.htm.

This was fantastic and as other posters have said, the water is amazing. I asked one of our guides on the holiday does he ever bring water with him kayaking and he said that he didn't need to as he could just drink straight from the river.

Not boats of any decription with any motors are allowed on some rivers to keep them to an almost perfect standard.

If you are near Slovenia, Drive up to Lake Bled and stay there for a day or two.

Its mostly moterway and doesnt take long.(a few hours)

    just home today

loved it... flew into dubrovnik , which is amazing, then sailed to a few different islands one more beautiful than the next. i dont think u can go wrong anywhere really. went 2 yrs ago as well and flew into split. we spent 5 days on hvar and loved it.
dont worry about the stony beaches, every village sells water/ jelly shoes for about 7 euro. they do the job.

    have a great trip

Flying out to Croatia in August and spending 7 days sailing around the islands, apart from Hvar and Brac, any other recommendations of islands?

    Thanks..

I'd recommend Dunrovnik for a couple of nights, but if you're only going for a week and don't want to travel too much then Hvar, Korcula and Brac are quite close and pretty amazing. Hvar is probably the best but they all have something to offer. Get a taxi boat or rent your own to go to the smaller islands off Hvar for a days sunbathing, great experience. We just went on a day trip to Brac to go to the Zlatni Rat beach, the one you see on all the guide books.

If anyone is going pu to the North West I'd highly recommend the island of Rab, it's like paradise and a great way to unwind after a few days partying on Hvar! We went taht way o the freey because we were flying home from Pula, but Ryanair have stopped flying from there.

Croatia is definately my favourite holiday destination though, have had my best holidays there and have never heard a bad report from anyone else.
