Aftermarket temp guage?

    Hi All,

The temp guage on my MK1 MR2is playing tricks on me. Sometimes it reads correctly, sometimes with the engine stone cold in the morning, the guage is half way without even starting the engine. Don't think its the sensor on the block as taking the wire off that rarely drops the needle in the car or if it drops, it only goes down to about the 1/4 mark. When the engine is running for a few minutes, the needle is in the red eventhough the coolant is only lukewarm. Anyone know if there is an easy fix for this or an aftermarket temp guage (preferably electric) that I could wire it. It's a bit worrying to be driving with the needle in the red with the engine stone cold. I've bled the system & changed rad & expansion bottle caps prior to realising the guage was faulty.

    Thanks.

    T

Well its probably the gauge but could be that the wire to the sender has broken and is earthing off the car body somewhere.

You seem to be getting random readings so it might not be earthing all the time. Your going to have to get the dash off and run a new wire from the gauge to earth and see if the gauge goes to MAX and then remove it and should go to MIN. If it doesn't then you can be pretty sure its the gauge.

I think temperature gauges are set to the sender so I don't think you will be able to get any ould gauge. Well you could do that but it wouldn't be very accurate.
An old smiths temperature gauge might do the job or

    Thanks, Joey

I'd forgotten that it could be the wire causing the problem:o. Guess I'll have to remove the dash & run a wire outside the car back to the sender & see what happens. That's the dash OK in your link.

    Thanks,

    Tim
