Are accounting firms hiring?

I was recently let go from an accounting practice.

I was just wondering if accounting practices are actually hiring staff in the current economic climate? The firm I had worked for let staff go in the past year and hired no new staff.

Is this the general theme in the rest of the country (I'm in the midlands).
Would I be even worth my while sending CV's to accounting practices?! I can just imagine myself sending out 50 CV's and not getting so much as a reply!

(I am part-qualified ACA, exams done, training record awaiting submission, 3.5 years experience in practice, none in industry)

I was recently left go from an accounting practice also. Fully qualified ACCA. Don't know if you are willing to move to Dublin but if you are have a look at Irishjobs.ie, Deloitte and E&Y were both hiring.

I myself have decided to go to Australia as there are no opportunities here for me in where I want to go with my career (Industry) without necessary experience.

There will be one or two jobs going for sure. I hope you get good results in your exams. I was in the same boat last year when there were far fewer jobs been advertised.
I know the place I'm in now just signed up 3 new people for November intake only a few weeks ago, but then again they were only one of about three companies in Dublin that seemed to be hiring during the whole of last summer.
