It was a mildly amusing attempt at informing us that Queen of England is coming for a visit.

Time to get some mini Union jacks to symbolise how we have matured as a nation :pac:

Oh, so when is President Van Rompuy arriving?

This is going to be the most expensive security operation in Ireland in decades & nice to know that we will be paying for it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,572 ✭✭✭✭brummytom

OP, I can't see anything on RTÉ or the BBC; where's your source?

    EDIT: Sorry, found one http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/northern_ireland/10399494.stm

She's pretty old. She might die before the event and save us the expense.

    Ugh.

Hope it's pissing rain for her when she gets here and her plane ride is the most turbulent one ever, yes, that's how much I hate her

She won't make it past the Germans to the quarter finals.

Also - when did we start referring to football teams as 'she' - are they like boats now?

Wonder if she'll bring Phil the Greek with her. If she does I expect some epic paddy and potato jokes. :pac:

I think the Taoiseach can use this moment to recapture his popularity

*A hush falls as the Taoiseach approaches the Queen*

*He puts out his hand to greet her*

    "Good evening, Mrs Windsor"

    *Silence*

    *Crowd goes mad*

Why do you hate the little old lady?

Could we not just get one of the ones that nobody in this country knows, cares about or hates with a passion (eg the son who was in the Navy, whatever his name is)? Then we could scale down security and the thing would pass quietly without any fuss.

What has she done to warrant respect, out of curiosity?

Her amusingly racist husband has already been here. FF gave the okay for Willie Frazer's bigotted FAIR organisation to march down O'Connell St without any foresight. Some unionists point to the reaction to that as typical of people from "down south" and I fear there will be trouble if this goes ahead. SF protesting this won't win them any votes. It may be one step forward in Irish/Anglo relations but it could also be one step back in North/South relations if it turns sour. If it goes ahead there will of course be some cringeworthy celebrity hunters/decorative plate collectors out cheering which will further enforce the jackeen/west brit opinion of some of our own population who live in the captial.

What has any head of state done?

We had a Norwegian king here a while back, and I don't recall anyone asking that about him.

What bit of Ireland does Norway occupy?

How about a poll as to whether she's welcome here or not?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,762 ✭✭✭✭stupidusername

I understand some people maybe being angry with this because of the recent bloody sunday inquiry, and that's their own opinion, but I'm pissed over it because of the amount of money that'll be spent on it. OUR MONEY. And we haven't even been asked if we want it... feckin shower of cúnts.

I think it's about time we got over the colonialism thing, so I wouldn't be bothered about it in terms of that, but to me the idea of royalty is just bollix anyway... the fuss being made for any head of state / royal family would piss me off just the same.

Has any other head of state bestowed an honourary title upon one of their Colonel's for murdering Irish civilians? I'd be interested to hear about if you could find one.

    Interesting comparison.

In fairness, it's not that long since Statoil withdrew their occupation of countless forecourts.

I don't hate anyone. I'm personally indifferent. But I can see why people might dislike her and what she stands for. However, I feel that it's only right that she should strip Derek Wilford of his title prior to visiting. I believe this would be a very strong gesture of good will with intent of reconciliation.

I wouldn't say i personally hate her to bits but she comes from a line of people who oversaw thousands of deaths and atrocities. She may be a figure head but she has some say. You cant say if the queen came on BBC and said she was against the the troubles in the north that they would be still there.

She isn't as much of a sweet old lady as some think. I get the impression lots of people in various countries don't see the bad sides in there leaders.Bush,Queen etc and we need to get rid of elephantman face cowman Cowen.

You're seriously comparing the occupation of part of Ireland for centuries with an oil firm selling their petrol stations?

The Tenth century called and want their spelling back.
I should add that none of those are fjords. Only Carlingford and Killary are proper fjords. Those places actually refer to fords over rivers.
