I was bored and got to thinking why certain clubs or societies are disliked by others in the college. which society do you all dislike the most and why?

(remember E&S is gone. and admins, it doesn't harm anyone)

Filmsoc took my money and then I never got an email from them at all, except for a bunch of Viagra ads sent to their mailing list.

I'm beginning to wonder whether there ever really was a Filmsoc, I think some enterprising Viagra salesmen just managed to con me out of €4 on C&S day.

I'm gonna go ahead and say Snowboarding. The members I personally know are actually all ok, but still, it's... a Snowboarding society...

Oh and SVP - was at their quiz last year, in the top three teams before the last round. When they called out the winners, the numbers seemed wrong so we asked them our score. Turns out they forgot to add in our points for one of the rounds and we would have finished second and won some nice prizes. When they saw the mistake they didn't apologise or anything, they just laughed. Sure, you could argue they do a lot of good that makes up for it, but I REMAIN BITTER.

The only soc I didn't like was E&S... It's kind of a shame they're gone, a common enemy really helps bring people together

Probably for me the Anime & Manga soc or else Airsoft...heard though a lot of people seem to dislike snowboarding and style soc...

I hear those Games Soc guys are pretty gay...:pac:

Right I'm saying this now, anybody that personally attacks or insults members of any club/society will find themselves infracted and possibly banned. I've already deleted a couple of posts of this nature so that should be the end of it, I'm sure most of you are capable enough of criticising a club/soc without resorting to personal jibes.

And here I was thinking this thread had the potential to become quite fun...

    Islam Soc,
    LGBT,
    The Christian Union

And any others of this ilk.

My reasons...can't say anything against them without being called a racist/bigot/homophobe etc etc etc.

But in seriousness, Style Soc. A former chair made an unofficial rule some years ago along the lines of 'No fatties'

Redbrick are cliquey, all get from Airsoft is shot, Book Soc just fell apart, Drama....well, finding things I don't like about them, shooting fish in a barrel.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,354 ✭✭✭Urizen

I also pretty much hate BookSoc. After it attempted to suck the life outta me and all that...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,448 ✭✭✭Garseys

I used to love Drama...now its
Meh. Clique just got too much for me.

Urizen: does that mean you are gonna hate paranormal at the end of the year? :pac:

In terms of clubs, there's one or two that come over As arrogant twats. I'm sure if I actually talked to them they probably wouldn't be as bad.

Insulting Bitch: I've found isoc to be
really reasonable...Christian Union on the other hand

Isoc aren't preachy and in my experience very easy to deal with and friendly aswell.

Whether you personally agree with the society is completely separate.

    Every society is cliquey.

Even the ones you're in, and especially the ones you're most involved in. Whether you realise it or not. You might say you're open and welcoming, but people perceive you as being cliquey.

Similarly, the groups you perceive as cliquey may very well be open and welcoming. I'm sure they consider themselves that way.

I can't honestly believe that any society would discourage the idea of new membership. They all yearn for it. But people have friends, and will always get along better with their friends than random new members.

    That's life.

Some societies (and clubs) are more openly inviting than others. Denying that is a lie, accepting it is equally boll*x, it's denfinitly something that some socs need to work on..

I have to say, on C&S day in September Style Soc didn't exactly make me feel welcome.

Games Soc on the other hand seemed pretty cool

It's too soon to tell. Hopefully I won't be running that more or less on my own :P

True that. And it's counterproductive, everyone needs to work on it to get a decent membership next time around.

It's not something I've ever noticed, and I've been a member of more societies than I can count on my fingers.

I honestly think it's in people's heads. I've joined societies for the first time and found them opening and gotten involved. Then I meet people who joined with me and stopped going and asked them why they didn't stick around. More than once the answer has been that the society in question was "Too cliquey."

Looking back at previous years I still don't understand where this connection comes from. Every year there is probably one or two drama members elected to one of the 10 SU positions however have people seriously not made the connection between Drama being one of the largest societies in DCU, and therefore home to some of the more active students in the extra-curricular sense, and them getting elected to such a role?

I think the problem is any large enough group of people who already are friends/know each other are going to seem intimidating to anyone on the ''outside''. I can't say I dislike any club or society, but then again I don't really know that much about many of them, just the ones I go to regularly.

Cool might not be the word >_> (<3)

Certainly is the most fun society ever though - everyone should join.

In my experience I've actually found it's not the experienced/entrenched members of a club or society who are cliquey, but the newest ones. The older members are usually eager to get new people involved and to breathe new life into things, but if you miss a few weeks or you're a fairweather member you return to find that the other newbies have banded together and have little time for you or inclination to let you into the group. =/ Which of course hardly encourages you to keep going.

That being said, I've honestly only encountered this perhaps twice, out of 10-12 clubs and societies I've been involved with on a fairly regular basis.

ETA: AND GAMESSOC ARE LOVELY. <3

That exact thing happened me. Since then I lost all interest in any clubs or societies.

Although I dont wanna get this arguement going again, the Gaelgoirs certainly done themselves no favours with all their militancy in the last few weeks of this semester gone.

Other than that - Airsoft, if you like guns, apply for a shotgun licence and join a gun club. Im told clay pidgeon is great fun, far better than running through fields in €€€€ equipment shouting phow phow phow

E&S were the only society I didn't really like, mainly because of the fact they tended to be a "jack of all trades" society in regards to the events that they claimed they would run during the year.

Other than that, I don't think that there are any societies I really dislike. If anything, I dislike some of the people behind the society, but this isn't the place to name names and start badmouthing people.
