Building a pedalboard

Has anyone who built their own pedal board gone as far as to put a lid on it? I was thinking of just literally having a big long plank of wood, screwing hinges on and making a lid and screwing a handle to it. And some way of clasping it shut.
The only thing i'm not too sure about is protection for the pedals. Is the velco strong enough to hold the pedals in place even if the board is lifted upside down? Or will I have to stuff the lid with foam. If so... Is that kinda foam easy to come by?
