    Hi

I attempted to replace an outer CV boot today for the first time . It is on the passenger side of the car . I took the driveshaft from the transmission , dismantled it and rebuilt it again with new outer boot . Now I can't get it back into the transmission .

On the splined end I noticed a ring about 5mm in . It's doesn't seem to do anything as it holds nothing in but sits loosely in a groove . It's not sitting snug on the shaft so it is a little larger than the shaft itself at one point or another . It's not mentioned in the manual and I am just real curious now as to what it is . I may have tried to take it off when I first took the driveshaft from the transmission making it larger than it should be but can't be sure .

Am I right in thinking that I need to use more 'grunt' let's say, to get the ring to contract and allow the driveshaft to slide back in ?

In the photo u can see the groove I'm talking about just near the end of the driveshaft . You can just see the ring sitting in there also .

    It's on a 1.6 litre 4A-FE with a 6speed transmission .

    Thanks In Advance

it just needs a good hard tap to get it in , the spring clip you mentioned just keeps it in place ,keep the shaft as straight as possible with thesplines when putting it back you should feel it clicking into place when it is fully home
