Joint assessment

Am I correct in assuming that joint assessment is only available to married couples and not unmarried partners?

If only one spouse works they get all the credits. But does this affect social welfare payments that would be made to the other?

Yes only married couples can opt to be jointly assessed. It would depend which social welfare payment he/she was recieving ie is it taxable?

    Hi

As Daisey said. It would affect the social welfare entitlement if they are cohabiting.

    Kind Regards

A friend told me that the new cohabitation laws will allow for joint assessment. Is this true?
