    i am following this tutorial

    http://www.splashdowndivers.com/photo_gallery/underwater_photography/image_processing_technique.htm

i'm using the dust and scratch removal filter to get rid of specks in the background but i dont want a circular area touched. and in tip 8 they say use the magic wand to select the area whatever and then use the "remove specks and holes mask" to deselect the specks that i want to get rid of with the dust and scratches filter but of course cos the specks aren't selected the dust removal thing doesn't work.

i can't find the specks and holes thing but is there another way to select all the little specks. if i increase the tolerance it starts selecting the thing i dont want it to so not that way:)

cant find it on google either think they made it up:)

It doesn't sound familiar to me.. and I've been using Photoshop for a very long time... through many versions.

Perhaps they're suggesting that you select the specks that you want, and then run the filter on it?

Using the healing brush, with a VERY small brush size, you should be able to touch-up specks pretty well.

Right click on your selection and pick "Refine Edge".
Never heard of remove specs and holes. Must be an ancient legacy feature from before PS7.

Also if you can avoid the magic wand. It's sensitive to noise. If you have a newer version of PS use the excellent quick selection tool.
Also look up techniques such as using colour channels to generate masks and selections.

Another way to do it if it is easier is duplicate the layer, do your repairs on the whole layer and then delete the areas of the new layer you dont want adjusted, you then see through to the original layer that hasnt been altered. Its a roundabout way but if you arent sure about selecting little ares it will be the easiest for you, just make sure you are using an eraser with siftness so it is not noticeable.
