Just wondering can anyone advise me on what the salary rate is for an Engineer working in the Middle East (specifically Qatar). I have never worked abroad before so really have absolutely no clue about this and a prosepctive employer has asked me to advise what kind of money I expect.

Looking around, it seems that Car, Holidays, Paid Flights etc. all form part of standard deals as well. Any advice welcome.

Depends on your experience and what sort of engineering really. Remember Middle East is tax free too.

My advice - make sure you know what your leave cycles are, make sure you get a company vehicle or something towards buying one at least as public transport is non-existant.

If working in Ras Laffan (Qatar) seriously think about living in Doha Vs Living in Al Khor, Al Khor has less in it but is a handy drive to the industrial city, Doha has much more but is a long enough commute when you factor in traffic.

    Salary completely depends upon experience.

Make sure your tax affairs are in order and educate yourself on what your tax responsibilities are in Ireland while working abroad. You may be liable for income tax on your earnings if you are not careful.

I've been in Qatar since January working on the New Doha International Airport as a mechanical design engineer.

With your level of experience I'd be expecting at least $100k.

Was that meant to be euro or dollar? If its dollar then its about what I've been offered working on a Water project in Doha. Have half accepted it - just need to get details on accommodation & flights

SUVs are a necessity rather than a luxury for western engineers in Muslim countries who work in remote (often tribal) areas.

My uncle is an engineer in Egypt, lives in a secure compound and has his own driver and a maid.

Dollars as the Qatar Riyal is tied directly to it.

You'd be mad to turn it down if that is indeed what they are offering. Presuming flights, accomodation, transportation etc are all paid for, you'll save a fortune.

Go for it even if you are still employed in Ireland.

What's the situation with "bringing the money back" into Ireland. Do I still get caught for tax that way? Not much use making a bundle of money & still then having to pay tax on it!

Not being funny but yeah. It's taken me 7 months to find this job & until I've got a contract signed ain't nobody gonna find out a thing about it. Anyway, all I did was a Google search

Didn't go through an agency. Honestly what happened was I heard about a job for an Engineer in Kilkenny, I google searched it to find out some more & this other job in Saudi popped up. I thought "why the hell not" - banged off my CV & they phoned me back the next morning saying that they'd be interested in me for a different job in Qatar. & here I am.... or there I'll be shortly as the case may be

Im going to hijack this thread as opposed to setting up a similar new one.

Ive been offered a role in Abu dhabi with the company i currently work for.
they have recently set up an office in the middle East and are beginning to win work over there with there partner company.

Package is decent- 50K euro tax free, flights, accomodation and car all included.

Doing a bit of research i could probably get an extra 10-15K in the same role elsewhere in the region.

My thinking is though that id' be better off with the company im with as i may have the oppurtunity to come back and work here again if things pick up a bit.

Thoughts on this?-hardly seems worth risking changing companies?

    (Project/Civil engineer- 6.5 years experience)

    Apologies for the late reply.

Just transfer the money in reasonable amounts home each month to your current account.
