Hey - was out for a swim in Dun Laoghaire last night beside the pier and came across some jelly fish.I think we were pretty surprised to see each other:eek: Luckily enough I wasn't stung. Just wondering is this a common thing? Is there any way of knowing if there are some in there before I go swimming in there again?

Its a fairly common occurrence during the summers. Where they are from day to day depends on winds, currents, tides etc. The seethrough ones with the pink circles are completely harmless, but I wouldnt befriend any jellyfish with tentacles if I were you.

I was out swimming at Seapoint about two weeks ago and came across literally hundreds of them... at first I tried avoiding the clusters but there were so many that I eventually just swam on through them. Although I found it very unnerving, I didn't get stung (these were pink and transparent ones).... If that's the worst type of sea life we have to contend with in these waters I'll take it!

how exactly do I differentiate between those with tentacles and those that don't ?! Do they not all have tentacles? I'm thinking of going swimming there again tonight but not loving the thought of having to check which ones are harmless and which ones have tentacles!

Swim somewhere a little deeper and you usually see less especially around set point just head out a little further
