    Hi all,
just wondering if anyone has an opinion on water stops for a 10km.
i find it loses valuable seconds(don't have these to spare!), esp if the water is in cups, havn't mastered the knack of drinking on the run so would you say the benefits of hydrating outweigh the time it takes to drink the water.
I've given up on water stops for this distance. do the leaders take in water?
    thanks

No, generally not necessary if you're normally hydrated and you're not running in the Sahara.

I don't bother in a 10k unless it's really hot, and I'm not exactly fast. Just hydrate properly before the race.

I wouldn't take water during a 10k unless it was exceptionally hot. It would just be sloshing around in my stomach and I wouldn't get a chance to absorb it during the race.

You don't need to rehydrate if it's less than an hour. If you are closer to 30mins like the leaders, you definitely will not slow down never mind stop for water.

At most on a hot day, and if you have been standing around waiting for the start, you might feel dry at 5K and a mouthful of water will do until you get to the finish. If you spill half of it over you in the process, so what, it will help cool you down.

I would not normally take a drink during a 10k.

I find to get a decent drink from a cup, I have to slow down to a walk.

Handy for pouring over the head though !

Had a 10k on Monday and arranged with my friend to just throw the water in my face.(He was working at the stand and it was a really warm day!) A couple of runners near me didn't know what was going on!

Go have a look in an Elverys near you. They carry a range of water belts. don't expect ALDI prices though.

Doing the connemara half this year, my boyfriend thought it would lighten thing the mood a little to spray me with water!! He also did it to 2 first aiders. We all got a shock but it was actually v.funny, everyone had been very serious up to that point, and it was a roaster of a day so it didnt go to waste on the face!
