As per the topic heading what would i be looking for? I was thinking of maybe trying asparagus, rhubarb, kale-are these winter hardy enough?

I've never grown asparagus, its too much trouble to orgainse, but rhubarb will grow no problem provided you give it plenty of manure/feed. Kale is ok too, even though pigeons like it.

Raspberries, gooseberries, blackcurrants, strawberries all easy and hardy. Runner beans, onions, leeks, courgettes/marrows, sprouting brocolli, are pretty reliable.
