How many USB devices do you have connected to your machine?

Which version of XP (Pro, Home, Corporate)? What type of Dell, for that matter?

it sounds like the iphone in recovery mode is drawing too much power away from the other USB ports, is there any way you could pop down to a friends house that has a DSL or broadband connection so that you wouldnt be dependent on a USB modem during the update process?

It does sound very much like the typical symptoms when a USB device is drawing too much power, especially if 2 or more ports share the same power, which is usally the case with hubs and some laptops.

Try and remove unnecessary USB devices and if you can put the 02 modem and the iphone on clearly seperate rails - eg. 1 on a front USB port and the other on a rear USB port. Usually the USB Mouse port on a laptop has a dedicated power line.

Thanks guys.. just got reading your replies and will try to get hold of another PC in a couple of hours. Never knew that thing about a USB device needing too much more that it kills the other USB ports.. thanks for your advice.

90% of the battle was understanding what the heck was going on and why it was happening.. the 10% it will take to remedy it is the next and smaller step. :)

not as portable, but a USB hub with it's own power supply might be an idea

some monitors have build in usb hubs, again they may be powered

Phew ! all done now. And its fine.

Now on an unjailbroken phone for the first time in ages and also running the latest software.

Lost a few photos and pics but that's my own fault for not backing up for ages.

    Thanks to all who helped.

Oh and P.S ... the modem still disconnects when i plug in the iphone.. guess its time i bought a new PC before the iPhone 4 comes along :)
