Ipod Restore

I have an old ipod and I was changing the hard drive in it but the hardrive I put was a mac formatted hardrive so I had to restore it. I got to the point where the icon on screen says you have to plug it into the wall adapter,I connected it the wall adapter but it didn't work. Now the apapter I used wasn't an apple made…
