Timing/Cam Belts and Chains

Any of the modern diesels use chains? Or are they all belts?
What about your average petrol? Most seem to be belts.

Anyone ever replace a belt with a chain? Belts are a pain
I remember the old Volvos had non interference engines meaning if you had a belt if it snapped it didnt ruin the engine you just timed it and put back on a new belt. I had an old DTI vectra that had a chain which didnt have a replacement mileage they were expected to outlast the car!

I think Mercedes stuck with chains to a large degree although I know little about mercedes.

Pretty sure you cannot replace a belt with a chain :D

Ford use a Timing Chain on the previous model Mondeo 2000 - 2007, but the new one uses a Belt.
