Finding Temporary Work.

    Hi guys,

I'm looking for temporary work for the next 4/5 months as I've got something else lined up in November - problem is I just don't know the best way to go about finding this type of work.. my background is in the legal industry.

I've been in to many agencies and have trawled the various well know Irish sites but I've had no luck. To be honest it doesn't even have to be in the legal area, I would consider anything as long as the pay is reasonable.

I suppose I'm just looking for some advice and opinions? I'm sure lots of people have faced a similar situation so I could really do with drawing on their experiences.

    Thanks

    EireEV

I could really do with advice on this one.

I suppose what I'm really looking for is some leads. Where should I look for this type of work, what should I consider etc..

    Thanks for reading.

I'm trying not to be rude here, but it seems to me you need a major reality check.

Think about how many out-of-work lawyers there are in the country. Think what impact that will have on the availability of legal work in general, and temporary work in particular. Think about the impact that it will have on wage rates. Just THINK.

Now, if you really want temp work:

    1) Make yourself a "temping" CV which focuses on the skills you have, rather than your job titles. No more then 2 pages long, and if there are any words with more than three syllables, dumb them down.
(eg my professional CV talks about requirements analysis, my temping one talks about making changes on the computer - same stuff, just different words)

    2) Every day, walk around the shops/businesses in your area (or the biggest area you'd be willing to travel to), looking for staff wanted signs. Hand in a CV when you see one, and try to chat to the manager while doing so (don't be surprised if the staff don't let you see him/her, though).

    3) Check jobs.ie and the FAS site three times a day, at least. You'd be amazed at how quickly some jobs disappear off jobs.ie, in particular.

    4) If someone offers you 9.50/hour, accept it with gratitude and make the best of things until your something-else starts.

NB I have assumed that you really do need "anything" - that if you were a serious contender for any contracting opportunities you'd not need to be asking here.
