    Hi,

Does anyone her know if car dealers would accept an 8 year old car for scrappage? I know that the rules state 10 years but do garages take newer cars than this?

My car's got over 160,000 miles on it, is giving a fair bit of trouble and most likely would be nigh on impossible to sell without spending a good few pound on it and getting it through the NCT!! The car's probably only worth €4,000 if it was in good working order which it ain't at the moment.

Thanks anyone for any advice you might offer me.

The car to avail of the scrappage scheme must be 10 years or older.

For the government scrappage they do but some manufacturers are doing their own. I've only looked at Renault but I'm sure others do aswell.
That said, you might well be able to negotiate the price down to their scrappage price anyway.

I was referring to the Govt scrappage. What individual dealers do beyond that is their own business obviously.

Renault were taking cars at 8 years old under Renault Scrappage but that would probably only get you €3,000 (with Renault), perhaps Saab Ed will confirm whether that offer is still available officially or otherwise.

Else just ring a few main dealers and see what they are doing - there is bound to be someone who'll do you a deal.

Garages probably give pretty much the same discount for cash as they do with a scrappage anyway.

I was aware about the 10 year rule alright. I suppose it'll be a case of trying different dealers and seeing what they'll offer me. Renault seem to be the maker most people are talking about with regards scrappage. Thanks everyone for the replies.

Some dealers are giving the scrappage amount to cars that are less than 10 years old for one reason , its worth €1500 ;)

There are great deals to be had out there at the moment. Renault are by far and away leading the way. The only thing you want to know is not what you're getting in a trade-in / scrappage value, all you want to know is how much its gonna cost you , another words how much money you've got to hand over. Nothing else matters really ;):)
