Extra TV point UPC

    Hi

I have a UPC cable connection with a wall box that has two outlet jacks.
I am considering putting an extra tv in an upstairs room.

    Question.
A pal of mine has a spare UPC set top box from a cancelled subscription, if I use this settop box and plug it into second jack will it work, or does it need a new card inside or something?

    Thanks
    Nail

    It needs its own card.

UPC will probably come looking for that box from your friend as well, and if he doesnt have it itll cost him something like €149.

Is the second jack on this point not just for FM?

You can't take someone else's STB, they don't own it - it is property of UPC and they won't enable boxes for you that you just "acquired" from someone else. They'll only let you use STBs supplied directly by them.

Also, you would need to pay an extra subscription for an additional STB.

It depends when the point was installed, and who installed it. AFAIK since it became UPC they don't install TV/FM filters. We got a new UPC-branded point installed recently and it's got two outputs, I assume they are both unfiltered as they are not labeled otherwise and they don't promote their FM radio service any more (it's already been phased out in some regions). I don't know what Chorus, NTL, etc. usually installed. When we got Irish Multichannel in the late '90s they just stuck some co-ax through a hole in the wall, no splitter, no junction box or anything. The original Westward Cables TV point in our house (prob from the '80s) had a TV/FM filter. I think Cablelink and others usually installed these too.

UPC outlet boxes still have one port filtered for FM only.

Really? The documentation supplied with our new stuff gave the impression a modem or STB could be connected to either socket on the outlet box thing. I haven't looked inside but the plastic casing doesn't have labels. Also why would they bother? I'm surprised the FM service is still even running at all, and the last time I tried it several of the stations were dead.

If you take the front cover off the box you'll see the frequency range for each port printed on the label.

Yeah I did that earlier today. It boggles the mind why they'd bother installing that

What does it take for me to have TV in an upstairs bedroom? Is it a viable option to do it without paying UPC each month? I have the basic TV package by cable so no STB. When I ran a cable into my back room before, the quality of the picture declined, would I need some type of booster? Thanks.
