Spraying inside of new build

I got a good quote (by my guess) for spraying the entire inside of the new house - walls and ceilings.

The spray would be essentially the undercoat, in 1 or 2 passes (whatever is needed for fresh hardwall to be covered properly)

The painter said that the ceilings will have to be re-painted afterwards will a roller - as the spray finish is too shiny, and if we ever had to touch up a cieling, any brush stroke on it would be very noticable.

Is he pulling my leg here, to get a bigger job out of me - i.e. is a spray finish on the cielings as the final coat ok?

I understand I'll have to do the walls, as the final colour won't be white - but I really don't like the idea of going over all he ceilings!

Anyone else gone the spray route?

    Hey

I went with spray painting...white as well...........2 coats on ceilings and one thickish one on walls.....as you say walls will be painted at some stage in different colour....but the 2 coats on the ceiling is the finished job.....no need for anything else to be done...

Mine was painted last week by spray with 2 coats, the celling is finished but the walls will be painted again after we move in.

Finish looks great and I dont see a need to paint again so some time.

Your painter is correct in that any touch up by brush or roller later on will be obvious.

    Hi Guys,

Could you give me a rough idea of the costs involved and the size of each house? I hope to do something similar and my house is going to be 2340 sq ft.

    Thanks.

2500 sqft plus a 400sqft attic conversion was €650 including paint.

    What? wow...that's excellent.
My quote is for 3,400 sq ft, few high cielings, but 1,500 including paint.

thought I was getting the deal of the century

We were going to go down this route but were advised not to.
Professional painters in the area won't touch it!
Think it's as they feel the paint will be too easy to flake off as it hasn't been 'rolled' into the walls, if you know what I mean.
(I wasn't the one who was talking to them so I don't know the exact details)

All I know is that we were gonna do it & now we're not.

    Anyone any feelings on this?

I dont see an issue with sprayed paint peeling off. What I have seen some painters do is add a cap full of pva to the paint mix. This will stop the paint soaking in allowing them to get away with 1 coat & is very likely to peel after so that is something to watch for.

Sorry my last post should have read €650 without paint. Paint was €300 so €950 in total.

I spoke to my cuz before gettin this done and he is a highly skilled painter who does work for interior designers etc (FWIW...;)

He said to make sure that they add Emulsifying Bonding Paint Additive (EB) to the paint when they are spraying it on for 1st coat ...this then prevents flaking etc....It's dear enough stuff but I took his advice......

Also he told me to specify to them that they must first remove/clear any Plaster splashes/imperfections off the walls... He also recommended Fleetwood Extra Cover as the best paint to use.....

    Hope this helps...
