    Hi all,

Does anyone know how to get an hotmail/live address working with an iPhone?

I've googled around but am getting conflicting reports - some saying its not possible, other saying they got it working.

I tried one guide, but all I get is account info could not be verified.

I just chose the "Other" option from the new mail account list, put in my name, email address and password and the iPhone did the rest.

When I try that it starts looking for imap/pop servers ...incoming mail, outgoing mail, etc :S

My phone just knew them itself.

    But here's the settings:

Choose POP at the very top, not IMAP.

    Incoming: pop3.live.com

    Outgoing: smtp.live.com

yep i just put in my hotmail address and password and hey presto but i just deleted it because of all the spam to my hotmail, especially when you can't "mark all read"

There is a specific hotmail app called mBoxmail.

Yip, I sign up to any site that I might not 100% trust using an old hotmail account. I have my hotmail setup to forward to gmail and gmail catches all the spam, works great.

Just to resurrect an old thread with some new information, Hotmail are apparrently updating their services to allow to connect over ActiveSync (Exchange) which will let Hotmail work properly on the iPhone (at last).

I got a mail from Windows Live Member services
To get Hotmail on-the-go, you recently tried to set up a service called ActiveSync from your mobile device.
We are really glad that you're interested, but we had so many sign-ups that we had to temporarily stop accepting new ones.
We're making constant improvements and we should be accepting new requests fairly soon. Please check the following website in about two weeks to see what's happening: http://www.hotmail.com.
Thanks again for using Hotmail--we're really sorry about this delay.

When it is up and running, you configure it in Settings > Mail > Add Account > Microsoft Exchange.
    User Name: username@hotmail.com
    Password: <your_hotmail_password>
    Server: m.hotmail.com

I've had it running fine since day one. Do I need reconfigure?

I imagine anyone who has it running already doesn't need to do anything.

I've always wanted to set up another email using a client like gmail etc, but never got around to it. All my emails are hotmail and therefore it would be a pain for me to change. But you said that its possible to set up a gmail account and then have hotmail forward any email it receives to gmail?
Could you please tell/link me to somewhere that would explain to me how to do this?

    Thanks

I have it running since for ages, too, but it was set up as an "Other" account. It doesn't reflect changes properly (e.g. If you read, change or delete your e-mail on the iphone, it still appears on unread or not deleted if you access hotmail via the web).

This update should work better - you set it up as an Exchange account type. This should mean that you can see your folders, and any changes made on the iphone will be reflected correctly in your account. (Also, it would probably allow for better support such as Push e-mail, etc., but that's just a theory until we see what they come up with in a few weeks time)

The web app works pretty well. Open your hotmail on safari and hit the plus button on safari's toolbar. Adds a nice hotmail app icon to your home screen too!

In hotmail, click on options, more options and select forward mail to another account. There you can put in your gmail address. From now on all new mails will be forwarded to gmail. My gmail account is also a windows live account so this may not work with a regular gmail account. I'm not sure how this is done, but my gmail account is also my xbox account and by default also became a windows live account.

In your gmail account, go to settings, accounts and imports. Send mail from another account, fill in your hotmail details and use smtp.live.com as the smtp address. Select reply to same address as message was sent and any time you open a hotmail mail in gmail and reply to it, it will be sent from your hotmail address.

Also, afterwards if you setup both your gmail and hotmail account in a desktop email client (outlook, mail, thunderbird, etc), then you can copy all your older hotmail emails directly into gmail and they will then be stored on the gmail server. Saves you from having to go between the 2 to find emailss

Tried doing this on my Iphone4 with IOS 4.01 on three (jailbroken)
and it keeps saying my password is wrong (i double checked on hotmail and its ok)
tried two different accounts and the same issue!
also tried adding in "other" and it worked ok
although as it was posted already it doesnt reflect changed made in hotmail!
    any thoughts?

Quick reply (as I'm in a rush).
I got hotmail working on my wifes 3GS last year and it's still working on her iPhone 4 now.
I had to enable POP3 to get it working. To get that done I needed to change her location to the UK in her hotmail settings. This is because POP3 was only introduced last year in the US and the UK (might have changed since then).
Anyhoo, once I get home later I'll try to find out the exact details.

The ActiveSync / Exchange service is not yet live for Hotmail (see the e-mail I got from Microsoft in my first post), they are looking to do something in the next two or three weeks. They recommend keeping an eye on Hotmail.com or the Windows Live team blog.

(Just for the record, I get the same behaviour as you).

Is the main purpose of hotmail now for once-off signing ups tithings you'll never use again and never want to receive newsletters from? Is for me! GMail nom nom.

so I got this working fine and now Hotmail is one of my email accounts in my mail section.

the only thing is that as it is downloading everything in my inbox from the server, its marking all the emails as unread. Because i never delete emails its currently at 500 unread emails and counting (even though they are all actually read).

    Anyone have this problem?

If you went down the POP3 route, then that's your problem.

On POP3, there's no way on the server to mark a mail as "read". So all mails appear to be unread until downloaded and deleted from the server. Of course you don't always want to delete emails from the server, but you also want to avoid seeing all of your emails marked as unread. So the email client maintains a database of emails that it has read, and when it connects the next time, it only retrieves any new emails. This is a workaround which all email clients have been using for 15 years or more.

The problem is that when you connect another email client to the server, it will see all of the mail on the server as "unread" and download it all again.

You're going to be stuck with it until your phone has downloaded all of the mail on the server.

What does that mean in practical terms ?

Mailbox on iphone syncs mail, contacts and calendar with your hotmail account.
Delete a mail on your phone and it will delete from hotmail.

How do you set it up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 68,317 ✭✭✭✭seamus

    1. Set up an exchange account.
    2. email address & username are <youraddress>@hotmail.com
    3. Leave the domain blank
    4. Put in your password and hit "Next"
    5. It'll try to verify and then ask you for the server name
    6. Put in "m.hotmail.com" and hit "Next"

    Presto.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,540 ✭✭✭freeze4real

After setting it up it says enter the password for the exchange account. What password do I enter. If it's my email password I already did and still it's saying password incorrect.
