The amount of old 97,98 cars I see on the roads since the Recession has kicked in. Where are they coming from or where were they hiding?:pac: They all seemed to disappear off the road for a few years now there back. Ive even seen a lot 87 and 88 reg cars in carparks????

I've seen lots of pre-'00 cars for years. Nothing wrong with them, especially if they're well built, like the E39 5 series or W124 Mercedes. Lots of old Civics and stuff around and they're definitely reliable. Still see the occasional '97 Laguna too. '87 reg cars tend to be still on the road because their owner loves 'em! Personally the year wouldn't bother me as long as the car appealed.

Im not saying there's anything wrong with them, But I have noticed there are a lot more on the roads thesedays? Im just wondering is there some massive warehouses or bunkers somewhere that was storing them during the Celtic Tiger days!:) Most Irish people wouldnt have been seen dead in a 90's reg car during the Bertie years!:D

Well I know for a fact that a garage did a scrappage scheme jobby with a friends car and he heard the mechanic say to the dealer he needed a car and said he would buy it back off the garage.

Maybe the scrappage scheme didnt follow through on that car but I wouldn't be surprised if that is a bit more widespread.

well some 80s / early 90s cars have become 'cool' again with the boy racers (e30 beamers, boxy starlets, novas, boxy clios) dont know why but they have, aside from that i suppose servicing and parts are dirt cheap with almost every garage seeming to have a servicing price war and throwing in all sorts of free bits, so people can afford to keep older cars on the roads

Well, Premium Axis cars like BMW, Audi, Merc were built like Panzer tanks especially in the 80's and 90's. Not like the tin cans today! But the amount of Micra's, Starlets, Fiestas etc.. and the odd Carina E, the taxi drivers are driving again. Surprisingly a lot of 98 and 99 Uno's generally black?

No, dont see many of them now, since the 1k driving alone fine came in last year! I have actually seen them with the suspension fully laiden with families in them bouncing along the motorways.

They stopped selling the here Uno in 1994, a 98 or 99 one would have to have come from South Africa or somewhere which would beg the question... Why?

There could be lots of people reviving older cars for a year to avail if scrappage schemes too???

I love driving older cars, my two cars were as old as I was, Mini & VW Beetle. I also miss my 1986 e30. I think newer cars seem more disposable or something. The cars of the 80's & 90's are almost the pinnacle of reliable build quality. Perhaps manufacturers realized that building such reliability means reduced future sales.
I hope more older cars survive, it's nice to have a mix.
Spotted a few nice "Hart to Hart" Mercedes convertibles around Dublin this evening, far nicer than any modern machine.

a 1.6 petrol in a panzer no thanks.

It will struggle to pull a small car like an A4.

The skin is safe on the rice puddin with that beauty.
