Will an Irish Sky Card work in France to get all the same channels?

    Hi,

Simple idea, I want to go to France and bring my sky card with me so I can watch the channels.

If I buy a box and dish over there and pop my card in... can I receive all the channels as if at home?

Also what kind of box should I buy over in France?

I've just phoned Sky here in Ireland and they say its possible and don't have a problem with it. Just want to make sure before I've to pay for a box and dish + installation over there.

It will work no problem once the dish is the correct size.

Buy a Sky Box here. If you don't have a sky digibox your heart will be broken. Unless you are very very good with programming Linux boxes your card won't work in any other box.
Go to adverts.ie and you'll get one for about €50. Get some local French guy to put up the dish and connect your box.

Er I wouldnt let on to Sky what youre at I were you.

Id also make sure the subscription (if new and/or multiroom) doesnt contain any clauses about leaving the box connected to a phone line and I certainly wouldnt plug it into a phoneline in France

Certainly possible. A pub I worked in Holland had an Irish sky box getting all Irish channels and registered to a home address in West Cork!

Why? They're fine with it. I hardly watch TV in Ireland when in France!

    That's great graphic. Thanks.

Problem is the box is in Nice. So looks like I'm outta luck! Just barely outta the range.

No problems picking it up there, local installer will sort you out with correct dish install.Sky can be picked up in Canary Islands and Greece so South of France will be fine.As was said earlier just bring box from Ireland and don't connect it to phone line, happy days.

Why pay for installation? You will be pointing only at Astra 28.2 so a fixed dish is all you need. I fitted one in France last year in 30 minutes - job done. Check a neighbour's dish to give you a rough idea of where to point and use the sat finder to fine tune. I used an Aldi kit which came with a sat finder. Depending where in France, you may need a bigger dish. I took advice and bought an 80cm dish but to no advantage over the original 60 cm dish. Mind you, I wasn't using Sky, just Freesat. GIve it a go, you can't loose!

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. Very helpful.

I think I'll try it myself, and do the install myself. Now off to adverts.ie / similar for a nice cheap dish.

The graphic refers to the 2D satellite footprint (which broadcasts the BBCs/ITVs in the clear and RTE/TV3 encrypted). This is not receivable in the Canary Islands without a massive (3-4 metre) dish. Areas in Spain can also have problems with 2D reception. SKY Sports and other subscription channels are beamed out to Europe, but the domestic stuff is difficult to receive beyond France / Northern Spain or Northern Italy without using biger and bigger dishes.

i install in the Languedoc Roussillon region of France where a Sky Zone 2 dish is ok or a 80cm.local dish slightly better. probably best to avoid the 'cheapest' dishes and go for something a bit more solid.
i would suggest a minimum of a 80cm. dish for Nice. or maybe even 90cm.
A bit of advice, with the extreme N. / N.W. winds (up to 140kms/hr.), the famous 'MISTRAL', that blow in the S. of France make sure the dish is solidly fixed in a position with some shelter. ie a wall behind it or a chimney stack .....Dishes on a pole up in the air give endless problems.
Dont forget the elevation down here is +/- 35 degrees!!!
the correct skew is also important, normally position '3' on a sky dish!!

you sure you want all the "sky" channels or will a freesat setup suit you better i.e. doyou want rte or will all the BBCs etc suit you fine? I find I never watch Irish channels to be honest and you could save on your sub.
Also, if you want sky, get it installed on a house here and get your HD sky+ box (as you will be paying sub anyways for good while) and simply take this with you to France and get some local guy to install a dish and wiring and you have a HD PVR too!
