new installation

looking for some advice on what I should expect when I order sky for the new house.

In the attic there are cables which have already been fed into most of the rooms in the house, so obviously i want the sky installer to use these rather than waste his time and my house by drilling here there and everywhere. Now these cables (around 11 of them) don't seem to be labelled at all, but 3 of them go to the living room (1 for a different position in the room and 2 for sky+) but the sky+ place does not have any connection point as the others do, just a blank face plate on the wall..when the installer removes this will he put something tidy in place with the cable connections?

How will he know which cables to connect to?

also, the outside wall is cream and i don't want black wire or black clips used to hold the cable from sky dish to the attic, would most installers have this as my previous install was a bloody mess tbh.

    cheers..

If you ordered from Sky, the installer won't even look at the cables in you attic. The sky installers from previous experence are the roughest butchers I've ever seen. When I built my house, I bought all the gear via ebay and got a card from sky. There is no way I'd let them butchers near my new house. No chance of any of that fancy face plate stuff your looking for from them. The cable/clip colour will be what ever they have in the back of the van. This isn't really the guys fault because they get paid fixed price for each job so why would he spend extra time at your house and get nothing for it.

If you want a proper job done, go to a local Sat/Sky installer and he'll do exactly what you want but it'll cost more. If I were you I pay the little bit more.

incidentally, I already have the boxes i need so i would just need a dish setup and the card at the end of it (as well as good wiring!)

apologies for digging up an older thread...even if it was my own ;)

still not ready to get sky in but have been thinking, if I get the correct wire in and connect it to the cabling I have in the attic and leave it there so that all the installer has to do is attach it to the LNB surely they would do that if they are from sky?

One other thing, my setup will have 2 maybe 3 boxes in the house, one subsribed to sky the other two FTA (with old sky boxes) I have an aerial in the attic feeding those rooms just now, would I need a combiner / splitter of some sort in the attic to combine the sat + aerial feed.

So room 1 is just straight sky+.

Room 2 is FTA + aerial for rte 1 etc
    Room 3 as above.

I have a splitter at the aerial level, do I then need 2 combiners to combine sat + aerial, 1 for each room?

    Cheers for any advice.

No they will not go into your attic based on most peoples experience. Best thing you can do is contact your local satellite specialist as suggested earlier in the thread.

Hope it works out for you.

So if I have it all wired up for them, wires hanging out of the attic ready to go into the LNB you reckon they would not use them? Sounds a bit mad - thought they wanted the job to be as easy as possible?

They do but once you mention attic they will run. Believe me you are better off with a local specialist anyway who can provide the combiners I think you will need.

You,ll need 1 sky dish with a quad lnb, after install , ,each fta box needs 1 output from a lnb
get a quad lnb for sky dish
one lnb, has the outputs for 4 separate recievers.
just go to www.satellite.ie search lnb or quad lnb its 24euros.

Thanks Ricman, I think in Jaggies case though if hes getting sky in he'll get a better deal as they subsidise the install. Rippy is a top installer in Cork who posts here, he'd be my first port of call.
