Trying to decide which of the above to buy. I expect to do about 12,000 miles per year. Basically I am wondering which would be cheaper in the long term bearing in mind that the 1.8 petrol car is on average working about €1,500 - 2,000 less than the diesel to buy.

I have a 06 S40 1.6d with 80k miles on it and it really is geared wrong in the S40, feels very sluggish in the lower gears. Parts are pricy but the level of standard spec especially on the SE is very good.

At 12k miles per year I think you should stick with the petrol engine as the diesel requires a good bit of maintenance over the petrol plus any savings at the pump could be blown away by a failed turbo or replacement DPF. Just remember that short trips are not good for modern day diesels.

I have a 1.8 petrol and it is a lot more sprightly than the 1.6 diesel. I took the 1.6d for a test drive and was disappointed with the results. If the specs were equal, I'd go for the petrol.
