Hi, I'm thinking of studying this after my Leaving Cert and was wondering what the course is like? If you study it, what do you think of it? Is it a good course for someone with an interest in languages like myself? If you don't do the course, have you heard any feedback from someone who is doing the course? Maybe you could ask them for me.
Also, what do you think of DCU in general? Is it a good university?

    Thanks,
    Brian

I've heard good things about the course from people doing it.

hi, I did this course, it is very well recognised when you actually start looking for a job but be ready to work! a lot failed first year, especially German. The year abroad is great and the college is fairly decent. all in all it's better than just doing languages through arts, but be prepared to work from the start!

You will also be part of the male minority in the class. ;)

Why do you think most fail first year?
Is it mainly set in the big lectures halls?

not sure why so many fail German - probably cos it's so different to Leaving Cert (well it was when I did it anyway). Big emphasis on grammar (which some people don't do an awful lot of in secondary school) and oral is v different too, LC German oral is a doddle cos you can have it all learned off but in AL orals are spontaneous conversations and some people aren't able for that. I'm sure there are other reasons but that's how I see it! But it is a great course! :)Good luck with your choice!

Most of the classes are quite small - the language classes in particular are only about twenty students, if that. Just be sure to choose your languages carefully, and as was already mentioned, be ready to work from the very beginning.

If you have any questions, just PM me. I do this course and think it's brilliant, the only thing I regret is one of the languages I chose! Oops!
