Sky Dish in New House... Any Use To Me?

So, the house I recently bought has (what I believe is) a Sky MiniDish and the pre-requisite plumbing in the form of a coax cable lying idle in my sitting-room.

I'm just curious as to what my options are with this, i.e. is there anything I can do with it? I have my Cable TV + Internet coming in from UPC, so I'm not interested in subscribing to any satellite options.

Howver, is there anything I can use it for? If I bought a Sky Box, are there any basic free channels I can get? Is FreeView applicable? I'm assuming we're not allowed speak of the the likes of dboxes here either? :)

The setup here may not be of any use, but thought I'd ask anyway. Thanks!

People get confused between FREEVIEW and FREESAT. Freeview is a Aerial reception from the UK only receivable as an overspill in the border countys and along the south east coast of Ireland
If your not wanting to subscribe to Sky then connect a Freesat box http://satellite.ie/acatalog/Freesat_receiver_box.html to the cable and you will get roughly 60 decent channels and a lot more Rubbish channels.
    list of channels here http://www.freesat.co.uk/index.php?page=whatson.Main&PHPSESSID=vcll0em900ggl7nfeqpd6ghhd2

OH BOY, THE JEWELLERY CHANNEL! :O

    ;)

That's great info, thanks very much for the reply scaller. So, for the price of the box alone, I can get all those channels listed? Including the HD channels (I think I saw a couple in there)?

Seems like quite a good deal indeed... I don't have a TV in that room yet, but I'll be putting a projector in there soon enough. Will definitely check that out.

    Thanks again!

Edit: I'm assuming that I would need a HD Freesat box in order to take advantage of the HD channels, right?

That's right you will need a HD receiver http://satellite.ie/acatalog/Freesat_HD_Box.html

Not wanting to hijack the thread but I have a sky box and dish (i cancelled my Sky contract) and cannot get C4 or E4. I can get the likes of UTV, BBC nad Sky News and a whole load of other useless channels. Are they not FTA?

when go go to Channel4 or e4 what message do you get on screen
If you have not done so already take out the Sky card you dont need it Unplug the power to your
sky box for a few mins when you plug back in the power you should receive them.
