Suspicious pricing of golf clubs...

    Hi All,

Struggling with my game I was tempted to buy a new set of clubs when I saw an offer in a well known Golf store in Blanchardstown.

A set of Wilson Deep Red WT100 Combo Irons. Price €299 for €199 if you trade in any set of clubs when you buy them. BUT, these same clubs are on this shops website at €224 (includes a 10% discount for buying online).

So it looks like they are deliberately inflating the shop price to make the offer of a trade in seem good value.

I thought this type of practice was illegal... anybody any ideas?

If you buy online they just ship them from their warehouse.
If you buy in store you get their knowledgeable sales assistant who will probably spend time with you and maybe even a few tests to check they are suitable for you.

    Solution:
Go to the store, ask every question you wanted to ask, do any test you can, then thank them for their time, walk out and buy online

Try them out in the store too...

Unfortunately the clubs are not suited to my handicap, they are more of a starter / high handicap club.

I'm just annoyed at this double pricing. If they wanted to give me a trade in €100 off their web price I might be tempted!

There's nothing illegal in what they are doing. A sticker price is just an invitation to buy, nothing more, nothing less. In fact, the law allows a retailer put a €5 price tag on such an item, but it does not oblige them to sell it at that price.

In the example you quote, you can see exactly how much your trade-in clubs are worth. And, as was pointed out, retail space costs money,. as does the time of the shop assistant.

As an aside, how much should they sell them for? What profit margin do you deem acceptable?

Or, in the store in question...

You get an ignorant and obnoxious sales assisant, who will spend their time ignoring you and pretending you're not really there. They probably will do a few tests on you - this will involve eyeing you up and down for long enough to decipher exactly what category of minion you are, before testing you to see how long you are willing to be ignored and/or treated to poor customer service.

Then same assistant gets extra pissy when manager has to tell them to stop talking pish to another shop assistant and deal with you.

brutal customer service in this 'shop' if its the shop in blanch im thinking of.

Ah, you've been in 'this' shop... where it seems sales assistants sometimes outnumber customers and yet nobody comes near you..
