So I drove to the beach today and went for a swim and when I got back to the car the key wouldn't operate the central locking or the immobiliser. Thankfully some WD40 solved the problem but that got me wondering.
What do you do with your keys if your going for a swim in the sea on your own?

dont leave them on the tyres anyway, there has been a few cars nicked in west cork when surfers went into the water and left the keys on top of the tyres,
the last time i went to the beach i left the keys in the g/fs handbag but when i went for a swim i spend half the time looking back at the beach where the keys were:)

So did you actually take the keys into the water with you?

You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

I thought this thread was going to be about messing with your car in the sand :D

The petrol cap in my old car used to flip out so i'd leave all the keys in the car and just put the fob in there

This might seem a tad mad but here goes:

Plastic zip lock bags (good ones) and a bum bag from a camping store = Keys, fags, lighter, money all dry.

There you are, works for me every time.

This sounds like the best thing to do.
Keep the key fob in the car and take the spare key with you.
Though still anyone could break the window of the car, get the key and drive off...

I think you do get plastic bags at outdoor stores which are specifically designed to carry your phone, keys, wallet etc into the water with you...

Get a copy cut of the blade, no chips. Lock the real keys in the boot, take the blade-that-won't-start-the-car-anyway in to the water with you.

Is it VW that have plastic blades for this purpose as an option? Some manufacturer does anyway. Fiat can also supply unchipped keys, theorethically for a locking fuel cap.

Seem pricey, but branded bags such as Aquapac, BeachPlay and aLOKSAK are recommended on a few websites. As usual there's a lot of fakes/copies for sale on eBay which are obvious rip-offs (and hence rubbish maybe:confused:)

Not for swimming exactly but I also noticed an ingenious item, an auto-inflating flotation device if your keys/phone are dropped into water:
    Seatriever Waterbuoy. Cool.

One of my mates has a waterproof bag/pouch that you can put anything into and the just clip it on to yourself. They come in various sizes. Ill ask him where he got it and what brand it is because it works perfectly with the watersports we do and ill write back asap!

Thanks for all the responses. Some good ideas there, especially getting a copy cut of the blade and also the waterproof bag thingy .:)

@Matt: Yes, I did bring the key into the water - a bit stupid but lesson learned.

Get a magnetic key locker which is a magnetic box you put the key into and pop it under the body work onto the chassis or some other easy accessible metal bit. They can be got on ebay for less than €5 and are a better job that leaving the key up on the back passenger wheel.

I hide the keys under a rock! Or in the old days before there was electronics in the keys I used keep it in a pocket.
