I got myself a Desire last week and I must say I am loving it, sooooo much better than the N97.
Anyway, it came with the standard 4gb micro sd card.
I am thinking bout changing it for a 16gb class 2 card, will this be ok?

The one that came with my Desire (and probably yours) is a class 2 Samsung card. Didn't have any issues with it speed wise, but when I upgraded to 16gb I got a class 6 card (just to be on the safe side :)). To be honest if there's a difference in speed I can't tell, the phone doesn't 'feel' any faster. We'll see when Froyo is deployed and apps start/work from the SD card.

Excuse my ignorance but could someone explain (or link me to an explanation) of the whole class thing when it comes to cards?

i'm looking at a 6gb microsd card class 6 for the desire i'm getting soon, am i wasting my time?

It's explained on Wikipedia. Bottom line: it should show the card's minimum write speed in megabytes/sec; the higher the class rating the better.

many thanks, is there any issue with a number being too high for a device?

Not as far as I know. The bottleneck is the card itself, not the device. Of course I stand to be corrected if someone else has factual info. :)

I bought a class 2 16gb card for mine. Windows always shows a transfer speed of between 4 and 5mb/s. not sure how accurate it is though...

Now moving on from that, where is the best place to buy them?
    Expansys, Pixmania, eBay?

i got mine here, was the chepest Sandisk one i could find at the time...mightn't be now though...

I'd steer clear of Ebay, unless u know the seller or have a good recommendation, lots of fakes on ebay...

Another thumbs up for www.memoryc.com - they are based in Kildare I think and Ive ordered from them a few times.

Delivery has always been very quick, and generally the prices are quite good.

Very interesting about the different classes, never knew that before.

I see on the memoryc site there is a 32 gig card but its class 2, would anyone recommend it or would it be painfully slow? I have a class 6 4 gig card on my Blackberry which I'm transferring to my Desire (arriving tomorrow). I have an IPOD touch for MP3's so would 4 gig be enough for apps, photos, vids etc...? Obviously depends on usage but I don't take that many photos and never takes vids.

The desire comes with a 4 gig card already installed. At least mine did - no need for faffing about with old cards n stuff.

I still need to transfer some contacts across from my old phone but am loving everything on the desire so far.

Personally I'm going to hold off getting a bigger SD card until I see how apps2gd handles the classes. No point in splashing out on a big class two if out turns out you need class six or whatever.
