Applying for unpaid work experience

    Hi all,

    I'm looking for a job at the moment. I just finished my first year in college and got let go from my last job (bartender) after Christmas. I heard something on the radio last week about applying for work experience (ie. an unpaid internship) with a job you have an interest in, just to gain experience if nothing else.

    Has anyone else done this? I'm thinking of applying to a car dealership as I have a huge interest in cars and I think I would really enjoy it. I would be willing to do any jobs they might have; washing cars, cleaning garage, goafer, etc.

    I'm not sure how familiar they are with applications for unpaid work experience so I want to write a cover letter to go with my C.V. I'm not great with writing cover letters, I just want to say that;
    • I'm a student, off for the summer.
    • I have a huge interest in cars and I would like to work there because I feel that they're the best at what they do.
    • I would like to work with them for a week or two just to gain some experience of the work that they do there.
    • I would be willing to do any jobs that they have.
    • I would not expect any payment.

    Can anyone help me with a formal cover letter? Any advice is appreciated.

    Hi
    This is the kind of job that you do not get with a good cover letter. you have a better chance of getting it by simply walking into the garage and asking to speak to whoever is in charge. Take a page long cv with just bare facts (name, address, age, exam results, interests and any similar work you did before even if it was just helping out a neighbour)

    Also, try not to work for free! By all means, work as an apprentice for free.. but don't do cleaning jobs for free. Literally ask for a few euros, you're not expecting minimum wage or anything.

    I plan on going in and speaking with the manager personally but I just said I'd bring a cover letter to go with my C.V. to show I'm serious about the job. It means a lot to me so I don't want to take any chances.

    I'm thinking of asking for unpaid work experience because its quite a high-end garage and I'm not sure if they would be interested in hiring someone with no experience to clean cars and do odd jobs, especially in the current climate. If I do get a couple of weeks work with them it would be a great experience and, if nothing else, a great thing to have for my C.V.
