    Morning lads.

Not sure if this is the right place so feel free to move.

Ok, sometimes on my gmail chat box a contact email address pops up and gmail asks me if i want to add it to my chat list.

My question is, is that the contact requesting me to add them into my chat list or is it gmail simply making a suggestion from my recent correspondence to these addressed?

    Just did a test there.

For me it comes up under your status on the chat box (if you invite them to chat) saying "email wants to be able to chat with you. Okay?"
with a yes/no button below it.

If you got the same message then it's safe to assume it's chat.

Right, mine comes up as a simple suggestion of someone to invite to gmail chat.

Ah ok take a screenshot next time. It's more than likely in that case it's the later of what you originally suggested but i can't say i remember ever seeing it.
