Rite have a small problem on an old tipping trailer which was refurbished last yr!

There is a small amount of oil leaking out of the ram! its a 3 stage ram and where the first stage enters the 2nd stage it leaks and the 2nd enters the 3rd stage!

Tisn't a big problem as its not tipped dat often but i would still like to fix it!

    Somebody suggested seals?

Are these complicated and costly to replace?

Thankes dat seems quite reasonable did you replace them yourself? Would any decent mechanic replace dem?:)

The ram itself is about 30 yrs old but seeems to be tipping grand i also noticed that if it was left out in the rain when it was tipped after that a nice dash of water came up before the slight amount of oil came out!

Simple enough job aslong as the cylinder inst scored, abbey seals in dub will have in stock or be able to make any seal you need.

Yeah we did it ourselves, yeah i prsume so.Seals are very universal,1 seal could suit 10 different machines

sounds like seals alright. You said it has been left out in the rain while tipped, as mentioned before if chrome is scored or pitted depending on how bad it is putting new seals into an old ram is pointless as the seals will just get chewed up and leak again. Fitting the seals is easy opening the ram up is the hard part!! (oil...stensil.....lump hammer...cursing.....sledge hammer....skinned knuckles.....more swearing..) happy hammering!!!:D

Right tanks for all the help lads! well The ram itself is probably about 30yrs old and hasnt been tipped in about 10 yrs!
How do you no if the ram is scored does this mean the chrome is like rusted? Well this ram is definitly not chrome anymore....How can you solve a problem like this?:)

id say just google engineering firms in your area, probably as cheap get a new ram to be honest though..
these lads in Athenry can re do rams I think but would probably just tell you to replace

Well just to update we never got round to fixing the ram as it wasnt that urgent TBH as twas leaking so little oil:rolleyes::rolleyes:
But recently it had a weeks work as a dumptrailer moving topsoil and stone and both the trailer and the ram wern't up the job atal if the truth be told..
So the ram now is fecked i reckon as its leaking over a litre at least every time its tipped.:(
I presume a seal is no good anymore but anyway the ram is well scored so it'l probably be cheaper to replace at this stage..
Have any of you been in a similar position or have ye dealt with companies manufacturing trailer rams. I am in North Connaught

Genfitt in Kiltimagh Co. Mayo are suppliers of agricultural spares to farmers and trade. They should be able to supply a replacement.

burke engineering in Athenry will do it for you, they will be able to replace the scored piston with a new one and do the seal as well..

I done this very job myself last week . Used a punch and lump hammer to open the top seal of a 4 stage ram. It took over an hour. Decided to spend 40 quid on a special wrench to open the remaining seals. Honestly it was worse than useless no matter what I tried could not get the seal housing to budge one milimetre. Ended up just doing the top seal and re - tightened it with the hammer and punch.

Moral of the story : don't ever go near hydraulic seals . Just get a new ram. Seriously.

Or, 20silkcut, get someone to do it who is doing it regularly. You would be amazed with the simple tricks that can be used, I have to do the same myself shortly and I'm thinking of just going to Burke without tackling it myself.

I have done a few single stage rams myself its handy lads believe me, don't know about multi stage but presume its the same

    this is my DIY method

examine cap screw and check for an allen key-some rams have an allen key on the screws to aid in keeping them from loosening
remove allen key and open cap screw
once cap screw is removed pull out piston might need a good tug

pick off all seals you can by hand and bend them a bit look for crack or signs of wear and tear,

once all seals you can remove by hand are gone again look for an allen key screw and remove- got caught once here nut began getting tighter as i uncrewed it

unscrew the retaining nut and remove the seal housing

get a screwdriver and pick out the seals, again examine for damage- usually these are the ones which are gone

might need a good levering with screwdriver to get them out, but these seals are pretty elastic and spring back pretty good

    reassemble in reverse order

Thanks aidanki, if you have to buy new ones, are they the exact same size as the old ones, or do the old ones stretch with age?

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

There's normally 2 flat faces machined on the ram where you stop it turning with a spanner.

Some boiling water over the nut will loosen it too.
