Extra man syndrome

Is it just me or do teams that get someone sent off play much better and seem to be the team with the extra man. I've noticed this in a few local games and even inter county too take the Dublin Wexford match for example.
Why can some teams not utilise the extra man effectively?

Ya Cork, Wexford and Dublin have all won all irelands in past after man sent off.

Think teams feel they need try that extra bit harder maybe its wake up call they need at times.

Perhaps the sideline too can have an influence in this regard with the 15 man side's management possibly not using the extra man in the best position possible and thus negating the advantage?

We used to train with an extra player and without, but most of the time we had some lunatics playing with us so it wasn't unusual to get someone sent off, ahhh good old under 12 :D

We used to play our extra man around mid field to float between half backs and half forwards, usually it was the quickest/fittest person on the team, if we lost a player 1 of the corner forwards was taken off and replaced with a player more used to playing in the position where the player was sent off (usually half back line for some reason)

I thnk its all about the mental aspect, when a team goes a man down they think right we have to dig in if we are going to win, whereas the team with 15 always have in the back of their mind its 14 vs 15 we have to be better than them, and I dont need to chase back the extra man wll pick up my man etc.
It takes a very disciplined team to make the extra man work well.

It seems teams do put in the extra effort when a man down, or maybe individuals start taking more respondcibility. Look at Dublin when they beat Galway in 1983, 12 men for Dublin, 14 for Galway.

GAA sub, take off number 15 :pac:

I think it's down to the fact that you can't make a mistake, goalie is the goalie so you can't say anything, but the wing back always plays a great ball that if only there was a decent corner forward they'd have scored
