Hi, I have just moved to letterkenny two weeks ago, loving it here but we juct got a jack russell pup and we need to get his vaccinations done. I am hoping someone can reccomend a good vet in or near letterkenny. We drive so I dont mind travelling for a good one.

    Thanks for any help.

There's an excellent vet for domestic animals, called Susan Roulstone, about 5 miles from Letterkenny. We got our pup's vaccinations done there. Take the road to Derry. Turn right 100m past Murray Motors (Opel Garage). After about a mile take the second right, and it's about 100m up this road. It's well signposted as far as I recall.

There's an excellent vet (by reputation) in Ramelton called Heidi. It's only 10-15 mins away from LK. When you come to stop at the T-Junction in Ramelton, turn right. Then where the road splits, stay left and the practise is in a place on the right.
I've gotten wormers/flea treatment from her in the past and she was very nice to me on that occasion. I've also heard from other parties about her care and courtesy.

I can't recommend any vets in LK unfortunately.
PM me if you want contact details/more info.

I'll second about Susan, shes great, there is an open surgery in the evenings, you go and sit and wait your turn, for operations and things you book a day fr that to happen, we've been using her since we got our boy almost 2 years ago and came highly recommended!

I live about 1 mile from susans clinc and never go near her, there is always huge q's to see her and any time i went she has been less that nice / gentle with the animals. i always go to the animal hospital in letterkenny, they are 400 yards up the ballybofey road, lurgybrack, from the dry arch roundabout. they are very good and always very friendly and the vets know their stuff.

Each to his own; would never go near the animal hospital in L'kenny again after one recent encounter....

I found a kitten 2 years ago that someone tried to drown. Took it to Susan, she checked it out, vaccinated and neutered it for free. I rang her out of hours and she opened up the surgery on a Sunday morning so I'd recommend her as well.

I didn't want to post this but I think it needs to be said in the interests of balance.

We went to her with a dog that was suffering and when I was unhappy with another local vets lackadaisical (sp?) attitude.
We wanted a second opinion and were obviously worried sick about our pet but she told me that she wouldn't even examine the dog until she had gotten information from, and spoken to, the vets I had left.
I walked out in disgust and will never darken her doors again. It appeared that keeping friendly with a competitor/peer was all she was interested in.
We then visited another vet who immediately spotted the problem, but as it wasn't diagnosed for over a week and a half, was at the point of no return and our poor boy was put to sleep to avoid more suffering.

I think turning your back on a very sick animal in distress over petty politics (or 'professional courtesy' as she put it) far outweighs her veterinary skills (which admittedly are well thought of, apparently, which makes the lack of action even more hurtful) or opening on a sunday to vaccinate a homeless cat.

Dreadful; but that is how it is, especially if you are in practice alone these days. We hit the same issues at the Animal Hospital which is why our collie is now on whiskey ;)

A vet can be struck off for not complying with these rules. Literally so.

The AH is a large and powerful group practice. Big business.

The way to get round this is not to say you have taken the animal elsewhere. That lets everyone off the hook legally and ethically. Then she would have helped, I am sure.

Most professionals stick together; old saying, "Kick one and they all limp."

By criticising another vet? SHOULD be able to do that but ....

Sad, but that is how it is.

    Highly recommend Heidi!
Her and her husband have been excellent towards me.

Been going to them for good few years now due to the large amount of cats I had at one point. They were quite cheap and even let me away with quite a few free things here and there. :pac:
Though in fairness at one point I was calling to see them every week sometimes even twice for tablets/shots for the cats(they were mostly sick strays I had taken in). :(

Definitely pop down there. Let us know how you get on whatever you decide :)

Thanks so much for all the help. I took my pup to the veternary center in ramelton and they are truely brilliant. He has been back three times now and had all of his shots, each time they gave him a full medical check and were really caring and friendly. I have never been to a better vet and would reccomend them to everyone. The three times I was there we had a different vet. (I guess it was who was on that day), i can say that they are all equally brilliant with animals.

I take my 2 dogs to Ramelton and get really great service there. Used to go to the Animal Hospital in Letterkenny but changed when I got the second dog. I've no regrets.

Can only say good things about Susan Roulston, our pup got knocked down on st. Stephens days and she was only too glad to open the surgery for us, which to me is going above and beyond, as i'm sure she was sitting down with her family when she got our call. I'll also add that the 24hr phone number for the Animal Hospital wasn't being answered that night.

I was also told many vets in Donegal have to take animals to Susan if they require certain types of surgery, (i assume complicated or specialised surgery)

We have allowed what we considered "fair comment" until now but that is going to change. Just today someone registered a new account just to post nasty things about a particular vet's practice. The comments were not backed up and were off topic in any event and have now been removed.

This thread has been running for 9 months and maybe its passed it's sell by date but we can leave it be for the time being. From now on we dont want to see anyone posting about their negative experiences with certain vets.

The OP asked for recommendations for a good vet and not reasons to avoid a specific vet. So if anyone wishes to post a recommendation then please do so but if you harbor any notions of castigating vets then don't post.

To save everyone the bother of looking at the first post again here's the relevant part

I think in the interests of fairness that negative experiences have just as much relevance to the topic as positive ones.
One positive recommendation might make you go to that shop/pub/garage/vet/whatever, but one bad review might make you stay away, especially if the health of your beloved pet is at stake.

So long as no-one is libellous/trolling in what they report on their experiences what's the harm ?

Ah brill i can post again-i couldnt yday even to state that i never set up an account just to post nasty thingss about a certain vet!! I just stated my experience which happen to be similar to other posts on this forum and i recomended a vet just like the topic.i was so annoyed to be accused of setting a account up for that purposes. I also 100 % agree with pique -as a dog lover i woul want to know ALL about a vet before i make up my mind

Im all for fair comment but when the thread descends to a point where recommendations are being outnumbered by negative comments then there is no more equality. It has then become like a magnet for one and all to have a good rant about their bad experiences with certain veterinary practices. On top of that there is the whole issue of defamation.

That hasn't been the case unfortunately - see my post from yesterday

I have no idea why you couldn't post yesterday.

You signed up to post in a thread that was started in June 2010 where someone asked if people here could recommend a good vet. In August 2010 the OP stated that they had found a good vet.

From your 2 posts yesterday I am still unsure as to whether you signed up just to promote one vet or ridicule another. Either way your posts were not acceptable.

There's a PM function here whereby you can contact people privately to express any concerns you may have but dont post them here in public.

I realise that this is an old thread now, but I really need to say how wonderful Susan Roulston is. She has been vet to my dog and cat over the years and has always been available out of hours whenever we were in crises and needed her. Friends use her too for their pets. I have 100% faith in her judgement and skill.

Heidi and Ludwig in Ramelton have an excellent reputation too. I would be less than confident with others though...

@ annaj, who registered today to post up exactly what I said wasnt to be posted here, your post is deleted and you are banned for a week. After the week is up we will be delighted to see you post in other threads here.

But just to point out to annaj - you should pass that story to one of the local newspapers and if they publish it I will un-delete your post again. Some how I dont think that's going to happen though. Papers tend to shy away from slander and when they wont print it then you certainly wont be using the medium of Boards.ie to post such trash.

If you feel so strongly about the matter and how your animal was treated then you really should see a solicitor.

The thread has well and truly run it's course so Im locking it now.
