I just bought a 01 mondeo and there is a horrible smell that comes out of the vents when i turn on the air conditioning.
Does anyone know how i can fix this?

I heard the catalytic converter can cause a smell similar to rotten eggs.

You need something like this: http://www.aldi.co.uk/uk/html/offers/special_buys3_13632.htm

On sale from time to time in Lidl or Aldi but should be available in motor factors too. You set it off in the car and leave the A/C on full for 10 mins until it's done.

...really, just bring it to a garage or you can buy an anti bacterial spray which comes witha long tube to spray down the vents. its from a bacteria building up on the evaporator. to fix it long term you should really spray it directly to the evaporator..

Let the garage fix it if you've just bought it.

    It was sold as is
Thanks i might just do that
I heard that it could be the pollin filter?
If i used that stuff and it was the pollin filter that was the problem would it have no effect?

I cheaked in a diffrent post that the pollin filter is not changed during a normal service so it might not have been changed for a while
the car has 100,000 miles on it

Its unlikely the Pollen/Cabin filter, its an area that gets damp. Why not just use the Anti Bacterial Cleaner (also in Halfords) and see what happens instead of all the questions, compared to buying a car, its pennies?

This exact problem happened my wife before in her X-type. It was the pollen filter - apparently she had driven through some deep puddles, and it was manky with dried-in stale puddle water - the mechanic just cleaned/washed it out, and it was fine after that.

I got it seen to during a service though, so it was obviously more cost effective than dropping it in specifically for that!

But yeah - exact same issue. Puddle water had been sucked into the pollen filter & gave a manky sewage smell out of all the air vents.

I had the exact same issue on an 04 Audi A4. Got a pretty good response from the lads here.
