How do we know the difference..

How do we know the difference between male and female names?
You could tell me a name I've never heard off before and I'd know whether it's a male or female name straight away. I don't know any rules for doing this, it's just something we all seem to know...

Same goes for pet names now that I think of it.

Except for when it comes to the names Jamie and Francis that can be used for both genders...

Ok, so what makes us know they can be used for both genders then?

Not all names are clear to whether they are male or female, we obviously know the common ones from being introduced to people, television etc...

There are people in the UK who think Enda Kenny is a woman.

That's down to his name sounding feminine rather than his leadership skills.

    Check what's in the name's underwear. ;)

Calvin Klein? I've never seen purple underwear before.

Yeah, I hear the name Enda and think Edna...I'd never heard the name Enda, male or female, before moving here so the confusion for people who have never lived/visited here is understandable...

guy called Enda I used to work with got his name tag misspelled Edna:D

Back on topic if you post something like "why are men. . " or "why do women. . ." its usually easier to tell the gender of the respondents.

How do we know the difference between male and female names?

Well now "Mary" would never make a hash of the washing up where as "Jack" seems to do it all the time - so there would be no mistaking those names!

And "David" would never be a bad car driver where as "Joan" is always a terrible driver!

I hope that clears things up for you! Its all about in what context they are used! :D :pac:

I recently encountered a girl on the internet with the same first name as me.

    This I found very unusual.

I checked downtown after seeing it. Just to be sure...

    Very easy!!!
The female is a female in any way and any name and any thing in life, it will refer to female and male Similarly...
For that name is just a way to communicate with others not only to determine species:pac::D...

Ooo trick question all can be either.

Good thread though, makes you think, I assume genders of people here all the time, realize when I make a post specifying "he" or "she", then i think sh1te, but nobody notices so..

Noura, I'm going with female, I'm overly confident on this one, don't blame me if i'm wrong blame the OP for bringing it up.
