My driving instructor has told me when stopped at traffic lights to put the car into 1st gear and pull the handbrake.. however i have heard from other people that you should put the car into neutral and then pull the handbrake... which one of these is correct? I'd obviously be more inclined to go with what my driving instructor tells me, but just wondering! Thanks

thats definitely wrong anyway, you lift the hand brak before going into neutral.

When I was taught, many years ago, I was told if I was first at the lights, handbrake and 1st gear, but in any other position, handbrake and neutral.

Both are valid - it really depends where you are in the queue. It's all about being ready to move quickly when the lights change.

If you are towards the top of the queue, then you should brake, engage handbrake then put car into first gear. Keep your foot on the clutch and be ready to take off smoothly when the light goes green.

If you're further back, then bring the car to a stop, engage handbrake and put car into neutral.

No matter which way you go, bring the car to a stop and engage the handbrake before selecting 1st gear or neutral.

I agree with the above - keep it in first gear if you are near the top of the queue, so you are ready. Otherwise neutral, and handbrake. The reason for this is that if some car rear ends you, you don't want to be pushed into another car, if you can help it.

But remember - the handbrake is always the first thing you do when you stop, and the last thing you do before you move off.
