Does anyone know can I go below a 38 on the front on a standard crankset?

You can't as far as I know because the 130 mm BCD spider is too big. To go any smaller you need the 110 mm BCD of a compact chainset.

I Searched every where i could looking for something smaller then a 38 myself for my double but couldnt find anything. Ended up just changing to a compact chainset.

I know you can do a 36 - 53 combo but not sure how well it works. Only heard them talking about it on eurosport over the giro when some of the pro's were going with that set up.

According to Sheldon Brown the smallest you can go on a standard double with 130BCD is 38. http://www.sheldonbrown.com/cribsheet-bcd.html

You can run 36-53 on a compact spider. That is, you can fit standard sized chainrings on a compact chainset (they are available in 110 mm bolt circle diameter), but you cannot fit compact sized chainrings on a standard 130 mm BCD spider as it is too big.
