Blown/cellulose fibre insulation

    Hi,

i'm trying to find the best (and cheapest!) way to insulate an old cottage roof.. there's very little space between the exterior roof slates and the interiot timber roof, about 6 inches but there is a hollow cavity. there is no room to make the roof any lower and there is a flat section in the centre under the roof apex where extra insulation could be put in...

just wondering if anyone has any idea how much the different blown insulation materials cost per sq metre? anyone know if they're covered under the grant scheme?

    cheers!

The grant for roof/loft insulation is 250eur and cavity wall insulation is 400eur. From what I understand then if any of those is your first application and you're doing them one by one then you can't get the grant. The lower limit is 500eur. From SEIA:

"When might you NOT qualify for a Home Energy Saving scheme grant?

If your first grant application would be for less than €500. So if you are only intending to do attic insulation (€250) or blown cavity wall insulation (€400) on their own then you will not qualify for a grant"

    Hope this helps.

Hi Ed, unfortunately the cheapest solution may not be the best. Are you in the middle of a conversion? While the blown fibrous insulations are very cheap it's not ideal to fill the cavity between the rafters, you run the risk of condensation build-up. Ideally you should use a board insulation between the rafters like aerodorm or rafterloc and an insulated slab. Doing this you can retain a 1-2" gap between the roof and insulation to allow air to circulate. You may be better off saving for a bit longer and doing this as you may have to core a lot of holes in the plasterboard to pump anyway ( at least one hole between every rafter.). The cheapest would be the recycled paper then the pumped fibreglass and the pumped rockwool. All three should be cheaper than getting a quilt insulation rolled out but then again it's not the best. The grant doesn't cover these blown insulations in the rafters the Seai guidelines can be found here " http://www.seai.ie/Grants/Home_Energy_Saving_Scheme/contractor/National%20-%20Guidelines.pdf " It mentions the ventilation requirements make sure your contractor doesn’t spout you nonsense about fully filling the rafter cavity and it will be fine. Also as Hmmzis said you won't get the grant for the attic alone.

Hope that helps you out a bit.
