just be careful, the money has gone down and the groups have got bigger .

twice a week is enough to hunt largish a area some groups hunt 4-5 days a week ,,animals go nocturnal ,hunters dont get the bang for there buck.

in the last 7 years wicklow has been over shot ,a lot of the small groups that looked after the ground and managed the deer have gone .

the super groups of 20 + shooters whacking every thing the see have taken over .

some of these groups have taken woods shot the caxp out of them and handed them back to coillte a few years later .

i stalked a wood for 16 and another for 8 years we lost it to one of these groups they raped it and handed it back to coillte .

we have one back now , i would like to get the other one back also .

there is sound lads out there dont be afraid to ask questions

Its a shame to see that happen JW, those same guys prob moved on to the next wood and destroyed that one too, with a syndicate that size it would be very difficult to out bid them for a lease. It once again proves that Coilte is all about the money, but sooner or later no one is going to want leases on these woods that have been shot out, unless they are going for next to nothing. How long will it take before you get the wood back to the way you had it? Whats to stop the same thing happening again?

Paying for shooting IMHO is wrong, we are a small county with Thousands of deer and only a few hundred or so deer stalkers

Deer damage Coillte land and yet they charge to hunt folk on it.
If Licensed stalkers could hunt freely everybody could benefit from it

Give it a rest Jw he has a valid point :)
if there was no great demand from lads willing to pay big money to shoot 'trophy heads' then coillte would be asking for stalkers to control deer in their areas as greenbelt do to some extent ,rather than sitting and waiting for the brown envelopes at tender time .

nature of the beast , fat boys with money will spend it like fools ,coillte will take every cent .

the problem is the jelly bellys do not want to cull or look after the ground , they want to go sunday morning if the weather is fine and shoot stags.

tac has no point, as there is a demand .

Jelly bellies shooting on sunday mornings? i hope you do not mean me, I work every Sunday ;)
Back on Topic, Demand is only made by making something exclusive.
Any man that worked in keypac can butcher a deer, any man that hunts foxes with skill can kill a deer.

So why should a lad have to be made of money to shoot deer?
It cost nothing to shoot foxes, rabbits etc.

    Deer are no different.
Coillte make the demand, not vise versa.

I don't believe in charging people to hunt, hunting for the pot (with land permission) is a basic right IMvHO.

My grandparents lived off the land, my great grand parents survived the famine by doing the same. Paying for Hunting food in my OPINION is wrong.
Trophy shooting is not my sport, I get more enjoyment eating; not hanging hats on a head.

I do not expect others to agree.
It is only my opinion after all.
    An average stalker

I have some of the best stalking lands in wicklow and not costing a penny .Ive never had to pay for stalking land nor do i agree with the concept......

I don't have a lease, I could never justify spending ridiculous amounts of money to shoot deer when there are lots of farmers willing to allow people to shoot on there land for free. It is an expensive enough hobby as it is.

But I also think that if it wasn't for leases and lads genuinley interested in looking after the deer our quality of deer would be a lot worse than it is in some places, if you think about it a lot of the deer we shoot are coming from Coiltes woods and if you have private land on the edge of one of these well managed woods then your sure to get good shooting.

horses for courses and all that , the demand is driven by guys looking for big heads wether they are irish or out of state 'guests 'there are lads that'll look after a piece of ground and manage the deer on it to the best of their ability , there are others that'll shoot all the decent stags/bucks and do nothing other than that ,there are others who give big money for a good piece of ground safe in the knowlege that they can sell off a few days stalking for good heads to offset the cost .
i know of one place where there are a lot of deer , the lads who lease the stalking shoot no females to speak off and use it as a honey pot for stags, we were out foxing (with permission)and i counted 64 deer in a 10 acre field
as far as coillte are concerned they are subsidising the forestry end of their buisness with sporting leases and other types of lettings biggest envelope wins afaik
just as a matter of interest how many hcap registered shooters are there in the country anyone know

If you do a search of HCAP you see a full list of everbody who sat the exam since it began.

Tac, there were over 4000 deer licences issued last year.

To the OP you should pick up a space on a lease handily enough, though a lot of forestry in Wicklow has been overshot in recent years.

I have spaces available on a good lease in the Tipp/Waterford region if you or indeed anyone else are interested. PM please if interested.

As a total newbie to stalking, i was wondering what is the average cost of a lease per person in Wicklow.
I am sorted for a lease for the coming season, but am wondering if it could be done for less than 850 approx.

It should be done for free, €850 is extorsion for maybe getting a deer IMHO.

Alas if folk want to pay that then let them off.
€850 buys an awful amount of ammo and even a bottle of Whiskey for the permissions at Christmas, maybe even a Turkey or goose.

Yee lads must be made of money.:D

I'd buy a thirdf rifle for that or a good scope that I would have for years.

The rules of a lease are so restrictive also.
I looked into it in 1999 but I said No way José :D

I was offered the chance this year but turned it down,I suppose its different strokes for different folks, if people can afford it thats their business, I just think its mental:). In saying that though I was often temted to pay someone to get me a shot at a nice Red. What kind of money would we be talking there, roughly/on average.

Well a red is a big Boyo.
I would like one nice head, I'd make burgers out of the rest.

I have a couple of nice fallow heads, the will do me. I mostly want steak these days.

Although a Bike red can weigh as much as a weanling bullock, you'd need a John Deere to pull him out of the bog :D:D:D

Are the fallow heads shot from an estate or did you shoot them wild, Its very rarely that I or any of my friends shoot a good head, they seem to be very bad, not palmated at all or mostly fish tails.

I will indeed, I have a great pic of a stag got not 1/2 mile from the door, but it is stuck on the hard drive of my old laptop.
The screen was gee'd and I got it on insurance.

I may get the stuff off it.

I got a fine stag I'd say it was his brother or 1st cousin
