I want to get the history checked on a used car and wondering which site is best. From what I found both cost €35 and are pretty much identical. Motorcheck seem to be slightly better. Just want to make sure I am not wasting my money on the lesser one.

I don't know if the 2 companies share the same informationor where they get it from but the information is not reliable. I was rear ended 2 years ago, €3k worth of damage which the other drivers insurance company paid, had the work done through the dealership where I bought the car, received the car back in perfect condition. A year later when I sold the car I did a cartell check and there was nothing in it about the accident!!!

Keep in mind those motor check services are a good start, but they only have information that people shared with authorities, NCT, insurance etc at some stage during the car's life.

Not everything is reported, so additionally to a car check service, you should also screen very closely service history bills, recalls done to the car (if any), minor (or major, who knows) accident, respray etc.

If the car is not cheap or can potentially cost a lot to fix, I would recommend to get it fully inspected by a mechanic prior purchase too.

Can some please advise; I am looking at a 05 car that was imported from UK 12 months ago. If I get a history check from Motorcheck or Cartell etc, will it include the full history of the car in both juristictions, or do I need to supply the old UK reg no and get a separate UK report.

    Thanks.

Hi John, A report from Motorcheck will include its history from both jurisdictions. So if you use an irish registration number for a car that was imported from the UK we will automatically include its UK information.

Just wondering about the number of owners. Does this include dealers or just end users. As the car I am looking at has 6 owners according to Motorcheck but the seller says theres only 3.

Normally the number of owners shown in our report indicates the number of times an owner has been added to the logbook. We show the dates of sale separately which would reflect any additional times a dealer took custody of the car without actually adding an owner to the book.

I'll check your report and confirm though.

This is as good a place as any to clear this up - do people actually expect that there will be a record of accidents included in these reports?

Because unless the car was actually written off I don't think these reports give any indication - the thing could have been tipped on all sides over the years and it would never show up. It's not like there's a field on the report for previous crash history is there?

While these reports are worth getting from a used as a taxi/insurance write off/ HPI check point of view, they don't guarantee the car wasn't crashed or clocked.

    a) Plenty of cars are severely damaged and potentially repaired without any involvement from Gardai/insurance
    b) Plenty of cars can have a good few K of repairs done through insurance and this will not show up in a report, and may not have had Gardai called.
    c) Even if the insurance and Gardai were informed of a fender bender, where would the information on the crash come from, surely the information would have to be sanitised before being passed on to cartell/motorcheck whoever

langdang is absolutely right. A clean bill of health from Motorcheck or any other provider does not necessarily mean that the car has not been involved in an accident or 'written off' by an insurance company.

I've written about the different types of write-off information that is available to Motorcheck here and would like to reiterate that a car history check works best when used together with a thorough physical inspection, not as a substitute.

Thanks, just got the report.....it shows a mileage discrepancy. Is there any more specific information I can get as I expect the seller to question the report. What should the mileage be? How significant is a discrepancy before it is reported? Is it Irish or UK? What is the source of the data, or from what time-period?

    Thanks.

Thanks for that....well worth the €35. For the info of the forum, previous mileage 126k, per DVLA Apr-09. Currently reading 77K....suspect my seller was also duped, but not my problem.

Just out of curiosity, is it possible to "un-clock" a car to approx the correct mileage. Not that I want to with this car as the mileage is too high for me, but can it be done?

Bought a car recently and got a history check from another company. History check said one previous owner. Registration cert said two.

Yep. You would be essentially 'clocking' the car again (albeit forward this time) and yes it's all too easy to do.

Would there be anything to be gained from running a check on a 07 Irish car which hasn't yet been NCT'd. The mileage will most likely not be verified. Only things that may show up are written off or taxi use , am I right ?
