Hi, I live in a new estate that was built two years ago. We had to wait 6 months for house to be built and only in the last couple of months have all houses been totally finished.
there are 30 houses in st, and 26 are filled....all of us are pretty much the same. young families and couples, either both working or 1 work, 1 childmind.
the four house left I only found out yesterday are now sold to the local council.
I asked alot of the other neighbours did they know this, and all of them said no they did not, and are very upset, because thats why most of us picked the estate due to all being similar and with kids all very young.
I have no problem with a council house as such, and it would be great if it was the affordable housing scheme, as there are strict requirements attached to it. But have been told that the houses are for the council who can put or rent anyone in them.
Our main fears in the st are that in the neighbouring town the council has put limerick crime families into estates, to try and break-up the fights feuds etc in limerick. (we are in cork)
Is there anyway as residents we can approch council and find out who they plan to move here, or have a say in the process. ?
The other issue people have is that now with the council in ownership of houses in st, the prices that were already on the floor from the €250,000 we all paid 2 years ago will drop now further.
anyone have any advice or comment??

Any housing estate that is taken in charge by the LA has advantages and disadvantages. The services would be looked after by the council, that means the grass being cut, the roads being looked after, the ESB bill for the lighting being paid, the drains being unblocked, etc., rather than waiting for some developers management company to come and take care of it.

Under part 5 of the Planning Act, since 2002 any housing development which goes through the planning process has to incorporate 20% Social and Afforadable housing into the design mix in some form, whether it is by contribution to the LA or the provision of serviced sites. The LA then tenders out for the construction of the houses or makes a deal with the developer to construct those for them. The divide between social and affordable is decided between the LA and the developer, usually, before construction commences and is based on local requirements and existing housing in the immediate area.

In your case, with a 30 house estate, the council should take 6 houses, it is likely that they have taken a mix of contribution and serviced sites. You could contact your local Councillors and they should be able to fill you in on what's going on.

We'll let it here for a little while to get the local's views and take it elsewhere later if needed after I talk to the OP....:)

Write to the Council and demand to know 'who' they will put in the estate and demand that the existing residents be given a veto.

honestly I find your views outdated.

What wrong with not wanting to live in the same estate as potential scum. My sister lives in a Council Estate and unfortunately she had no option at the time (Single mother etc etc) she does not like living in the estate because of the knick-knacks that live there...

Honestly, the fcuking idiots around here who get up on their high horses really bug the sh*te out of me.

Yes I know that the vast majority of people in Council houses are A1 but there is...ALWAYS that small minority that fcuk it up for everyone.

Can wait to hear the sh*te from the 3 bed semi-d crew claiming to living in Council Estates.

Oh and for the record I grew up in one also. Yes it was fine but there was/is scum who ruin our rep with the rest of the town.

OP - you may just be surprised to find the occupants are just people thats all.
Anyway who gets to choose their neighbours ?

Have to say that I'm very disappointed at the comments made by the OP who really does need to go back and talk to the solicitor who dealt with the conveyancing.

This topic isn't appropriate for the construction and planning forum as it appears the OP has problems with the "social aspect" of the area surrounding their place of residence.

    Thread locked.

Every estate contributes to council house (or services if the housing is not needed in the area).
Yours is not special or unique.
Assuming that a crime family will be moved in it silly.

Wait and see, complain before it has happened is idiotic.
