Im starting NUI Galway as a mature student (24) in September, just wondering about accomadation?

Im from dublin so I dont know anyone from Galway! I cant wait to start college. I really want to find a place were people are same age, interest etc. so I can get to know people without feeling like a complete oldie :)

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks a mil!

    Hey BroFlo

2 factors to take into consideration the price and it depends on what type of accommodation you are looking for - Party central or quiet and studious ;)
    • Digs (:D probably just little 1st years do this)
    • House Share for up to 4 people
    • Apt share 2-3 people

I personally would do a house share. Great way to meet people etc.

I have a room going in my house for the academic year renting in the Knocknacarra area, reasonable rent choice of double or single room. Only thing is this is sort of digs without the home cooking! It is a young family home with an 8 year old. It is a quiet house but partial to the occasional get together drinks. Let me know if you are interested and what amount you would be willing to pay in rent per week? I am 26 myself.

    Cheers

    Thanks for the reply.

Im interested in house/apartment share, im more worried about getting to know people than anything else, dont want to be left in a big city all on my own :)

I know Knocknacarra from a map but was never actually there, but its defo worth consideration, I am hoping to go down to galway in the next couple of weeks to sus out galway area in relation to prices, location etc, I also need to look into public transport or traffic situations for driving to college.

Your porposal is something i will defo be considering :)

Great no worries - if you want to come see the room(s) when you are in town let me know. No obligations etc :D I have 2 rooms going and also have a thread up offering it so best offer secures plus someone closer to our age in the house would suit better!

Knocknacarra is about 30min walk from college,5-10 min drive depending on traffic. We are also on the bus route!

    Happy house hunting ;)

    hey bro flo

pics attached there of the double and single room. Both have desks for study. Single room looks out on to the main estate and the double room is to the rear of the house. Not sure about prices yet. I am open to offers at the moment. I dont have it up on daft unfortunately.

if you're living in the city, you probably won't be driving to college. it's an absolute nightmare to find parking. you'd have to be there very early to get a place. galway's a very small city compared to dublin. you'd be able to walk to college unless you're living far out like Rahoon.

there's a map of galway on the NUIG site - here
also worth looking at is the accomodation office for information
check the classified ads in the galway advertiser as well.
daft.ie and findahome.ie are also good places to look as well.

    hope this helps :)

Just get yourself into the college bar (dont have to drink) to get to know people on freshers week. Or don't forget you will meet loads of people at lectures too. You are a wee spring chicken, i was 48 when i went to NUIG and stayed on to do and MA and got to know loads a people. Canteen too, you can sit with others and have a chat.

Its a lovely uni, enjoy it.

Hey, I'm a 22 post grad also looking for a double room in a house/apartment to share with other post grads, preferably in the city centre. If anyone has a room please let me know!

I'm 22 year old moving to Galway for my postgrad too (to be conformed next week I hope!) and havent sorted anything yet. I would hate to live in a party house but would hate a really quiet house too. A bit of atmosphere or craic is always necessary so dunno if living with postrgads is a good idea either!

    Hi all,

I am from Galway and work in NUIG.
I would highly recommend getting accommodation in walking distance to the university as parking is an absolute nightmare during college term for both staff and students...and the university has recently introduced parking fees to both staff and students. Details are here: http://www.nuigalway.ie/buildings/parking_other_info.html

I know someone in Lr Salthill (15 mins walk max) to the university, and she offers digs accommodation. Her house is also 5 mins walk to the city centre.
Fine big house and loads of space.

Let me know if you want any more info.
    Best of luck! :)
