    Hi there,
My xp install boots up, goes through the logo screen but stays black after that doesnt go to the login screen.
Doesnt happen all the time. When I did get in I ran a virus scan and malware check but its blank.
Ran a chkdsk and it found a load of index errors and tried fixing it.
Ran it again afterwards and found different ones.
Tried running chkdsk on reboot but guess what, just get the blank screen.

    Any ideas?

run chkdsk /R if its a disk issue this should sort it out.. if not try booting in safe mode to get your stuff backed up.. otherwise insert a second disk and do a parallel install ..

    Thanks
I tried it and got this:
    C:\>chkdsk /r
The type of the file system is NTFS.
    Cannot lock current drive.
Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another
process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be
checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N) y
This volume will be checked the next time the system restarts.

So see what happens next time I boot up.

    Have you tried system restore
boot in safe mode then accesories then system tools then system restore pick a week or so before the problems started to appear then restore to that date

best to copy off essential files and then check if the drive is on the way out :(

is the drive making any sharp noises ?

some PC's will have a disk test in the BIOS / Setup

you can use a ubuntu disk to boot the computer to copy files to an external harddrive
, it's also very handy if you have to restore an old registry but that's kill or cure stuff :(

I got into it and took everything off. Not making any strange noises, nothing. Ran chkdsk /f on bootup twice and nothing found.
How can you tell if its dodgey apart from the BIOS?
    Its a brand new HD.
Anything I can do to get my money back or a replacement if its gone?

We had a similar problem and we re-installed the operating system using the correct disc.

    No trouble since
